Mine are:

  • If you only shampoo your hair 1-3 times a week, leave the shampoo in for a minute or more before rinsing and then repeat
  • Use a microfibre hair towel. Dry hair after washing and then apply hair conditioner, it works better if your hair isn't very wet
  • Try a SLS free shampoo and silicone free conditioner - doesn't work for everyone but can make a huge difference for some
  • Finger comb hair in the morning before using a comb or brush
  • Use a good quality comb instead of a brush. I like the Kent ones. Comb the ends first, then mid-lengths down and then top to bottom
  • To prevent damage and maintain softness, use the diffuser on your hair dryer and hold the hair dryer a few inches away from the hair
  • Eat well, make sure you are getting enough vitamins and minerals (esp. iron, biotin, vitamin C and zinc)
  • Use a silk hair wrap to protect your hair overnight
  • Use a scalp tonic style product if you have any scalp issues
  • Stick to hair colours 3 shades darker or lighter than your natural colour
  • Get your ends trimmed when required, even if you're trying to grow your hair
  • Work with your own hair texture as much as possible
  • Try to minimise use of heat and bleach

Change shampoo and conditioner every 2-3 washes and rotate. Buy the best you can afford

Decent hairbrush - I only brush my hair with Mason Pearson brushes.

Dyson hairdryer is very gentle but drys hair quickly.

Never use hair straighteners.

Tame the odd flyaway with a tiny amount of Vaseline.

I’ve got long thick hair and only put conditioner on the ends.

Depends on your hair!
For me it's applying products on soaking wet hair, no shampoo and using handfuls of conditioner from roots to ends

-Treatments, treatments, treatments.
-Have a smartbond in salon with your hair colouring service.
-Always use a heat protection. When using hot tools.

  • When shampooing do 2 shampoos. The first will break up oil and debris on the scalp the second shampoo is what actually cleanses your scalp. No need to add extra shampoo to lengths and ends. The shampoo rinsing through is enough to cleanse them with out over drying.
-Towel dry or squeeze out excess moisture from hair before conditioner or treatments. Water will dilute your conditioner and you wont see the full effect. -Use a dangling brush like a manta brush or tangle teezer. -See your stylist regularly every 6-8 weeks. -Before changing your colour have a consultation at a reputable salon. -Avoid box colour if possible, it may not be compatible with in salon colour products. -understand that if your stylist recommends different services, products or styles it because they really have your best interests at heart. -Treat your stylist with respect

Long hair - conditioner from the ears down only. I have almost waist length, thick (thick!) dark hair and have gone from washing every second day (thanks to the overuse of conditioner) to once per week with a quick refresh of my blunt, heavy fringe every 3 days with tiny spot of shampoo. Best advice my hairdresser has ever given me, people stop me in the street to say nice things about my hair so it must work!

I have long thick wavy hair, these are my tricks.

  • Shampoo only the roots and condition only the ends.
  • Gently brush through conditioner with tangle teezer.
  • Wrap hair in towel rather than roughly dry and disturbing the cuticle.
  • After spraying with heat resistant or hair oil, I blast with a drier for a minute or two and leave until almost dry then style to finish.
  • I only sleep on a silk pillowcase and use a boars hair brush.
My hair is in very good condition and only needs trimming twice a year at most.

And also echo advice above re shampoo only for your scalp, I don’t touch the lengths of my hair with shampoo, it runs down as I rinse.

Shave it on clipper number 0 and forget about it Blush

Every independent hairdresser I’ve asked has said use the cheapest shampoo and spend on the conditioner.

I use a Superdrug castor oil based leave in conditioner after normal shampoo and conditioner, my hairs very shiny looking.

You do need a really good diet though.

LunaTheCat · 16/09/2019 10:28

Using conditioner before shampoo - my fine hair is always bouncier. Discovered my accident and it is a miracle.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 16/09/2019 14:10

And always use a wide variety of colours.
