Clearly my wardrobe wants to be someone else

Literally taken everything out to sort. Found about thirty dresses which are amazing.

I live in jeans and baggy All Saints type ripped jumpers.

However in my subconscious I obviously believe I am Audrey Hepburn.

How to marry the two...

Mine’s full of floral maxi dresses, which I intermittently take out, put on, feel a twat and take them off again, before putting on my usual jeans.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/09/2019 15:58

Wear them! Stick a leather jacket over them or an All Saints hoodie style thing so they feel more you.

SouthWestmom · 14/09/2019 16:00

Haha recognise the feeling a twat thing!

God knows what lifestyle I think I have.

I'm going to wear them I think. Maybe every other day. Some of them are gorgeous - 50s swing style, fitted sleeveless numbers, dropped waist etc.

Do we think a silver Damsel in Distress cloak is too much for tonight's Toby Carvery? ...

We all think we are Audrey Hepburn. That is the problem! I keep going towards shift dresses which look like a sack of spuds on me but which looked divine on her!!!!

SouthWestmom · 14/09/2019 16:44

Grin maybe I should get dressed and avoid mirrors. Live in a lovely little bubble of Audreyness.

I wore a dress today. DH was amazed (not in a good way either). “You do realise we’re only going to Caffè Nero and Tesco?”.

hammeringinmyhead · 14/09/2019 18:37

Yep. I'm going back to work soon and have bought some lovely shirt dresses to wear with ankle boots. Yet for my KIT days I've worn breton tops, jeans and trainers like every day at home with a baby!

SouthWestmom · 14/09/2019 19:09

What's stopping us? I wonder if I'm too middle aged and am going for warmth and comfort 😂

I think I just live in a very casual town where most of the women wear jeans and hoodies, so don't really want to stand out. Dresses also require some thought about underwear, how low or high to button neckline, tights or no tights, footwear...

nzeire · 14/09/2019 21:58

I have a wardrobe full of beautiful glam clothes... I work in a school, and don’t go out enough to warrant all the flash pieces... but it makes me happy, and it makes me organise more nights out so I can wear it all :)

WhoKnewBeefStew · 14/09/2019 22:03

That's me too... I bought some fab dresses and outfits for work, I put them on, feel a twat and then change back to black trousers and a blouse Hmm

LunaTheCat · 14/09/2019 23:14

I read somewhere that women bought clothes for the life they want to lead rather than the life they do.
I think it is good to wear the clothes and not save them for “best” .
Plan to wear your gorgeous clothes!

BusterGonad · 15/09/2019 03:34

Dresses are my item of choice, the only thing that holds me back is I don't keep on top of my leg shaving as I hate doing it and am lazy!

BusterGonad · 15/09/2019 03:42

Just to add, when I worked full time I'd dress up to the nines for it, beautiful dresses, gorgeous suede boots, make up. Now I don't work I literally wear the same boring crap stay at home clothes day in, day out! 😭

MrsToddsShortcut · 15/09/2019 04:34

In my head I'm Audrey Hepburn, in reality I'm more like Hattie Jacques.

My wardrobe is full of clothes that my head picked "Why Mrs Todd! You'll look simply divine in that darling shift! So elegant, so refined, so Tiffanys..."

My chest of drawers and chairs are draped with clothes that I actually wear, that Reality picked out "Come on gels! Slip that surgical truss over your bosom and HOICK! Then that man-repelling bri-nylon utility garment...come along gels!" Etc etc.

Such is middle age. Such is life. Tread softly Hattie, for you tread on Audrey's wardrobe...

SouthWestmom · 15/09/2019 04:48

Yup I'm definitely more Hattie than Audrey!

That quote is really true isn't it, I suspect in my head I am not cold, lumpy, etc.

I always end up in the same stuff despite my good intentions

I was like this, then got brave enough to wear a tiger print midi dress to work. One person said they liked it then no one else noticed. People do not care as much as you think!

But I also have a picture of how I look, which is rudely shattered by photographic evidence 😆

Pinkarsedfly · 15/09/2019 09:07

Oh god, photos.

I have a beautiful Fairisle jumper from Hush. When I wore it I felt like a sexy Scandinavian crime-solver, with a dash of Seventies glam.

When I saw a photo of myself in it I looked like a knitted grain silo Sad

BusterGonad · 15/09/2019 09:24

@Pinkarsedfly 😂

JaceLancs · 15/09/2019 09:30

I’m a dress person - no need to match separates keeps it simple
Still warm enough here for bare legs and flats or sandals
In winter I just move onto opaques and boots n add a cardigan

indianbackground · 15/09/2019 09:32

I buy my nice clothes when I am/feel slim. Means I bursting out of them at the time it comes to wear them.

SouthWestmom · 15/09/2019 12:55

Yes photographic evidence is very clear that I am not an Audrey. Audrey's older sister, wearing joggers to clean the house and await Audrey's return, having broken the zip on her little black dress and snapped a heel while nosying in her wardrobe.

I sometimes get hilariously overdressed just for the school run. Just act like your regular self and people will assume you have been to something
