bar shampoos

I bought a bar shampoo last week. When I use it, it makes my hair feel like cak. But then I read on the website that you have to give bar shampoos several washes to get the liquid shampoo residue out of your hair. It's been 5 days now (I wash my hair daily) and my hair has been getting worse each day! I have been using my normal liquid conditioner and hair mousse, so today I tried not using either of those, and my hair is a lank dull mess, and feels horrible! Anyone got any tips on bar shampoos, and how to use? I have fine straight hair, so the lankness is particularly yuk.

I have read the same re needing to wash it a fair few times to get the residue of bottled shampoo out. I use bicarb already in my hair as its great at getting rid of build up. I'm wondering if you could use that along with the bar shampoo? Lather it up and then sprinkle some on your head and wash?

I use a bar shampoo and conditioner but have very thick hair and only wash my hair twice a week so probably very different. I have had bars that left my hair feeling tacky. I have one from lush now, which works really well. Try another is my suggestion. Juliet soaps, I think it’s called has a good range

I tried using a shampoo bar recently (Friendly Soap) and yes my hair looked and felt awful. I thought if you used your regular conditioner your hair would never get over it because you’ll be adding silicones to your hair. I tried using an apple cider vinegar rinse as recommended and don’t know if it helped or not. The leaflet said to persist with ‘the purge’ but I just couldn’t bear to. It also said that in hard water areas you might not ever get through the purge. So that was me out.

I don’t know if I should have tried harder.

I should say that I really like Friendly Soap hand soaps! They don’t contain palm oil which is what attracted me in the first place.

OP, I would try another brand.

The first shampoo bar I tried was awful, and left my hair exactly like yours, even when I used an apple cider vinegar rinse. I gave up after about 10 days and just I used it instead of normal soap in the shower.

I switched to a lush shampoo bar and it's great - I am still using a normal conditioner with it with no problems (just until I find a good conditioner bar).

The soap based ones ( most of them are soap based even if they are called shampoo bars) all leave a residue on the hair, essentially soap scum. The purging stuff makes no sense, diluted vinegar ( any old kind, I buy cheapest white stuff, no need for apple cider) makes sense because soap is alkaline and needs something acid to bring the PH down to skins natural lower level.
Some bars contain actual shampoo ie. SLS, the lush ones do. They work much better but the SLS irritates my scalp so I wash my hair with an ordinary Dove bar as it is mostly Sodium Isethionate which is gentler than SLS. I rinse with water with a glug of vinegar ( I'm careful with my scalp).
My hair is very clean soft and shiny on this regime but very fluffy and I have to use hair serum to calm it down a bit but I have naturally bushy hair. I find I only need to wash my hair once or twice a week. I'm in a soft water area.

I use bars, but they are usually SLS based because my hair can't cope with the others. Lush are easy to obtain, but there are others that work just as well. Look on the Ethical board for more suggestions.

I'm using one recommended on there from PosyLondon or similar, but it was expensive for the size. Lamazuna also good and expensive, but seemed to last a long time.

The SLS bars are a compromise - no plastic and my hair feels like it does with a bottle of shampoo.

I think a trip to lush is in order! Good tip about using it like normal soap PiedImperial, I wouldn't want to waste it! (And it smells lovely!)

@BakedBeeeen I use a lush one, it's blue with seaweed in (I think it's called seatnik or similar) I hate using anything else. I only have to wash my hair about every three days, and even then it's not greasy! I don't use conditioner with it but they do solid conditioners too. It's dries super fast too! I would highly recommend lush ones, in an emergency when I have to use bottle stuff my hair feels greasy and heavy! I hope you find one you get on with!

I use the purple Lush one with Argan oil, I don’t need conditioner with it, leaves my hair squeaky clean. Lasts for months too.

Blueuggboots · 09/09/2019 17:27

I recently used a lush bar and whilst my hair was on, I had spots in my hair and all over my jawline.
I changed to another one from the good soap company and the spots have gone from my face and almost from my hair.
My hair isn't lank or greasy but read up on line - loads of people go through this period of adjustment.

Lush’s honey I washed my hair works well for my hair - I need to wash mine everyday . My hairdresser recommends a fairy liquid rinse of your hair if you are getting buildup (obvs only now and so it might be worth you doing a wee one before starting your new bar.

The lush Jason and the Argan oil is wonderful

OMGshefoundmeout · 09/09/2019 19:03

I switched to a lush solid shampoo about 3 weeks/6 washes ago. No problems at all with the transition. My hair looks smells great.
