Does anyone know anything about dyeing clothes?

I have this dress that I absolutely adore. Everything about it is perfect except for the colour which I haven't been brave enough to wear.
I think in another colour I'd wear this to death.
Any ideas on what colours and dyes would work and what colours are realistically achievable to get something a bit more suited to day to day wear?

Depends on the fabric and whether the seams are sewn with cotton or polyester thread. You can dye polyester thread but I've not tried it. I think it's called idye or eyedye.
You can only go darker and the colour at the end depends on the colour you started with. I found Dylon fades but it's easy enough to redo

Try posting a pic of the dress

Sorry I've been trying to post a pic for ages but it won't work.

It's on this link. It's bright orange

The Dylon site says you can dye viscose but I've never done it. I'd give it a go but assume the thread is polyester. Machine dyes are good.

I dyed a couple of things a similar shade to that dress recently!

Is it viscose? Dylon do a pre-dye that knocks back the colour, and they claim it works on natural fibres including viscose, but tell you to wash at minimum 95C when viscose is max 40C Hmm. I gave it a whirl with a linen/viscose mix anyway, and it faded the colour slightly but didn't work as well as when I've used it on cotton.

As NomdeQwerty says, best to go darker - dark red, or brown maybe? Polyester thread won't dye, but if you have the patience to go over the obvious threads in a similar coloured Sharpie that should last a few washes. The actual dyeing process with Dylon in the machine is pretty good. I don't think viscose takes the colour quite as strongly as linen or cotton (see pics online of people dyeing the spotty Zara dress, always looks a bit more faded than usual) but should be quite easy to make it a more wearable colour for you.

That spotty Zara dress. Lol. Seen that thing everywhere..... Berlin, San Francisco.

Anyway I think the thread will be the issue... I’ve machine dyed a few things but can’t stand contrast stitching you get at the end. What is it about the colour that’s not working for you OP? Maybe you just need to ease yourself in by wearing a sweater over the top so it looks more like a midi skirt. It would be a shame to ruin it with a bad dye job.

Ooh. You don't have a lot of colour options with that. What kind of fabric is it?

dudsville · 07/09/2019 09:01

But also if the colour suits you but just startles you a bit why not just go for it? Get out there in it. You only live once, etc.

I dye stuff all the time the machine pods are great the thread doesn't dye alot of the time but on jeans it looks great I needed a new pair of black jeans and couldn't find a nice fitting pair anywhere so dyed a pair that I had two of the same shades of worked great.
