Tips on breaking in dr marten sandals

Racheyg · 06/09/2019 19:13

Treated myself to Dr martens Clarissa sandals and they have torn my feet to shreds so much so
I'm tempted to bin them.

I have lots of Dm boots and took minimal wearing in but these are ridiculous

Yeah they are awful, I ordered them but sent them back having already done the same in the winter with black patent leather lace ups. Instead of the Clarissa I went for the Black Hydro Voss - link below - which are not the same look but really comfy and still quite cool in their own way. Not the same look as the Clarissa unfortunately.

Sorry about the awfully long link

Racheyg · 06/09/2019 20:15

Thanks @Freetodowhatiwant I'll check them out.

I can hardly wear shoes and the moment my feet are so torn. It's heartbreaking as they are so beautiful

I took a hammer to my Dr Martens mary janes for this reason Grin

Bananasandchocolatecustard · 06/09/2019 20:54

Moonshake - did the hammer work? The only way I can wear my DM Mary Janes (style without the yellow stitching) is to cover my heels in plasters.

Moonshake · 06/09/2019 20:55

Yes!

CaptainCallisto · 06/09/2019 21:01

My grandad always used to say that in the army they were told to put their boots in a bucket of water for about ten minutes then put them on over thick socks. The leather softens in the water so it takes the shape of your foot more easily. I've always wanted to find a pair of boots that pinched a bit to try it Grin

homemadecommunistrussia · 06/09/2019 21:39

Could you wear them with tights and compeed 'til they soften up?

Racheyg · 06/09/2019 21:47

@Moonshake what do you mean hammer? Literally bash them?

It's not my heels it's the top of my feet. I might try the water and socks

I broke in DM Clarissa’s last year - persevere as it’s worth the wait (and pain!)

Lots of vaseline on any sections that may be prone to rubbing, and lots of wearing round the house with thick socks until they’ve softened up.

On a really hot day they can still be prone to rubbing, but if I remember to put the Vaseline on beforehand that usually helps.

Mine did take a good couple of months to wear in unfortunately, but they have been amazing this summer!

QueenOfPain · 06/09/2019 21:58

Ohhh nooo, I got the new ASOS leopard Voss ones and they’re so ridiculously comfy. I’ve barely taken them off since I got them.

Can you cut your losses with these, get them on eBay and buy a comfier pair? They fetch realllllly good money on eBay, all DM’s stuff does.

I ordered the Clarissa first and was amazed at how bloody heavy they were, I knew I’d end up avoiding wearing them because my legs and feet would be aching from the weight of them. Voss are amazing and so bouncy to walk in. Perhaps not as sturdy as Clarissa but they are still great!

Moonshake · 06/09/2019 23:20

Yes a bashed them to make the leather softer. PArticularly the heel, which is the killer in the mary-jane style. Not sure if it would work with the sandal style - the water idea might be better.

Gonchypoo · 07/09/2019 16:38

I have them and yeah they're hard to break in but I have a few suggestions that worked really well for me. First I would cut some melanin (cotton wool pads will work too) and tape that on with surgical tape which should keep it in place. Protects your skin whilst you wear them in...unfortunately i have to do this each summer. Also, I sometimes put some fashion socks with them like fishnet socks etc.

KnobOfStork · 07/09/2019 16:41

Doc Martens socks, they're about 8 quid but reinforced at the pressure points. Have increased my unnecessary docs spending Grin and teatowel on the heel and bash to fuck with a big hammer or a squaddie to wee on them as I couldn't bring myself to do it

Ellapaella · 07/09/2019 20:12

Have you tried the DM wonder balm? I got it for my boots and rubbed it in every other day. It really helped to soften the leather.

fishonabicycle · 07/09/2019 20:59

Oh my god! The ASOS leopard Voss are amazing!

Racheyg · 09/09/2019 11:34

Ohh thanks @Ellapaella I'll try that. Let's hope nxt summer I can wear them 😂

Shoe stretch spray?

HasThisSoddingNameGoneToo · 09/09/2019 11:41

Vaseline. Rub it into the inside of the shoes every night. Do it for a week. It fompketeky softens the leather. (An old bf who was in the Marines taught me this.)

Span1elsRock · 09/09/2019 11:45

I had a pair of Rosa DM boots and my god, they tore my feet to shreds. Took a good 3 months to wear the buggers in, and I nearly gave up several times. I resorted to two pairs of very thick socks in the end. In contrast, my Flora boots were perfect from day one.

They really can vary....

Racheyg · 30/09/2019 18:16

@neonglow thank you so much. The shoe spray worked a treat xx

Now it bloody cold and raining and I can't wear them 😢
