Hair foil advice, please?

I have grown my hair out to natural grey and is now just to shoulder length. I went to have it trimmed today and discussed my needs with the hairdresser, which are:

I don't want to go back to dyeing it dark like before as the reason I stopped dyeing was because of the upkeep and mess - I did my roots at home with box dye and because silver roots show so much with dark hair I was touching up every 3 weeks which is not good.

But I don't like it natural grey either, so:

I want a mix of 3 colours in there, light ones, with a bit of warmth (my skin is warmed-toned) but I don't want a solid straight line when the roots come in. Instead, I want a more subtle, staggered root line and I will have the colour done every 3 months.

She has said that foils are the best option for this. I just wonder, is that so? I've seen a few videos on youtube and there seems to be various ways to deal with the hardline root problem. Or does it depend on how she does the foils?

I really need to understand what she is doing as I do not want to end up with the same problem I did before after 18 months of suffering!

There’s different ways of using the foils yes - sectioning and weaving. She’s right though, you’ll get less of a hard line
