It's my graduation in 10 days and I have no idea what to wear!

Just the title really! I'm 38-but a young 38. I'm 5ft 7 and a size 18/20 with 40f boobs.

I want a dress with hues of gold/mustard/red-like my sash.

I mainly shop at monsoon/next/sea salt/Boden/white stuff.

Can anyone help? I need smart but not wedding guest smart.

Thanks in advance 👍🏻

congratulations! would something like this work?

RezCowgirl · 02/09/2019 16:36

Sensible shoes! - or at least heels you know you can walk in. When I help out at the graduation at the Uni I work at I see so many women in silly tall shoes and look terrified that they're about to fall over.

This?

Low stock in your size but only £19! Also, has buttons which is handy for attaching gown and sash to

Ooh, I’ve just today bought the greeny version of this: m2.hm.com/m/en_gb/productpage.0808922002.html but the mustard and gold version is also lovely. I’ll wear without a belt though.
I’m 5:6 but with no boobs to speak of and it comes to my knee so no where near as short as the pic suggests. I would say you’d want something shorter than the gown anyway.
Planning to wear it with ankle boots (low heel tip above is a must).

I'm an academic, and see a lot of female graduands teetering and wobbling, arms flailing, on a smooth platform and steps at what should be a moment of total joy and achievement while the men stride on confidently so I echo a pp's advice to wear comfortable shoes you can walk in, and to score the soles if they're new and likely to be slippy.

The other thing you need is something that doesn't look mad with an academic gown -- some universities enforce subfusc for this purpose, but presumably you get to choose at yours. The gowns are quite heavy and tend to drag back on your shoulders, plus you'll have a hood and mortarboard to manage, so nothing too frilly/fussy in front, or strappy, and nothing in really light, insubstantial fabric, which will get pulled out of whack by pinning on your hood (which, annoyingly, is arranged to sit under men's ties).

I know you probably want to wear the dress out to dinner afterwards as well, but you might want to think about the colours of your graduation gown/hood?

I tend to wear block colours and plainly cut things with academic dress, personally.

Congratulations and good luck with the master's.

Congratulations! I would also suggest a block colour and nothing frilly at the hem it just looks odd with a gown to be honest...if mustard is a good colour on you then I would go for that to match in with your sash. Red can be a bit much in block !
