DIY buzz cut... How easy to do?

Just that really. I have had a short pixie for a year now and love that I no longer need to faff about with a hairdryer and styling is no more than a quick ruffle but... My hairdresser (who is great) charges me £29 for a wet cut. I get that there's a lot of styling involved etc but I'm far too tight to keep spending that on my hair every 6 weeks.

So, if I got myself a set of clippers, how complicated would it be?

I've done it a few times and its never been as neat as it was from the hairdressers. Its the fade that is tricky to get right.

Lots of mirrors, start at the highest grade first and slowly get shorter, and work out your angles and lines first before picking up the clippers. There are tons of videos on youtube of people clipping their own hair - checkout Heather Symmes.

I think it would be hard to get it looking neat. I do my own hair occasionally but mine is long and wavy which gives me more leeway.

What about going to local college/trainee for a couple of sessions then back to your usual stylist a couple of times a year?

Ineedtoknowit · 02/09/2019 14:11

I think the price is reasonable. Short cuts can be the hardest ones to do. My hair is shoulder length and all one length which I think is a lot easier but I’m charged a lot more than that.
My friend with short hair goes to a barber and pays men’s prices which are a lot less. Might be an idea?

Thanks Rez will check out Heather Symmes but if I'm honest 'mirrors, angles and lines' is not selling it to me!

Yes, I'm not saying £29 is unreasonable. I meant that I'm too tight to spend that amount every 6 weeks on my appearance. I'm too rural for a college I'm afraid.

Might try the local barber. I used to go there to have my previous undercut buzzed.

*I spent more on my long hair but only went two or three times a year.

Ask for a dry cut which is usually a lot cheaper. My local salon is £15 for dry compared to £35 for a wetcut.

I do it using a number 8 wahl clipper and number 12 on top and front where I want it longer. I also use thinning scissors. I use lots of mirrors and never struggle to get it right. I paid £30 every 4 weeks and now I save a fortune.

RevealTheLegend · 02/09/2019 21:35

Dead easy. Used to do mine till I grew it out. Saved £££

A diy fade is trickier but possible. There’s loads of YouTube tutorials.

WeeMadArthur · 02/09/2019 21:38

I’d ask at the local barbers, it’ll probably be less than £10 if they will do it.

Pinkandpurplehairedlady · 02/09/2019 21:50

I have mine done at the barbers and it’s a lot cheaper then going to the hairdressers

drivingtofrance · 03/09/2019 01:25

I've just spent an hour watching how to clipper one's own hair.

Don't know if I am brave enough yet though.

Mine needs cutting every 2.5/3 weeks - so it's time and money going to the salon.

I'll see how you get on OP :)

Poppins2016 · 03/09/2019 01:42

I second getting it done at the barbers!

... I used to have a flatmate who "did their own". In reality they did most of it and I would then finish it off in order to get the fade looking right and catch any stray bits. Much easier to ask a trusted friend to help than use a mirror!

pepperminttaste · 03/09/2019 08:10

Right. Much as I'd like to be your Guinea pig driving the barbers it is! To start with at least.
