Soreness wearing earrings - anyone else? Any tips?

I find earring so sore after wearing them for only ten minutes and for days after the site feels tender.

I have found that soaking the metal bit that goes through the ear in TCP for a minute then thoroughly drying before inserting can give a little relief. But it's not great.

I've just had my hair cut short and would really suit earrings now. I also have a small bit great collection as I love them but do I have to endure this pain to wear them?

I really admire and worship people who fall asleep with earrings in because they have forgotten they were there!

I get this when I wear cheap earrings. I can only wear gold or silver, or probably stainless steel (I have a belly bar which is stainless steel and has always been ok, though ive never tried earrings)

I can keep silver/gold ones in continuously without issues, but as soon as I wear cheap ones my ears hurt after a couple of hours :(

I’ve got these Think I got the narrowest post but the longest they did to start with as my lobes were quite swollen and you can’t adjust them like with a butterfly. I’ve since gone to shorter posts which you can buy on their own, you don’t need to buy a new jewel/ball.

another one here who only wears gold or silver otherwise my ears start itching and weeping and going green!

Also I never wear dangly earrings to bed, and can only wear certain studs, some of the earrings are too pokey, or the backs are sharp and edgy.

userxx · 02/09/2019 12:53

Yep, I get the itch if I don't wear silver. I've more or less given up on earrings now.

I can't wear earrings at all now of any metal.

Have really lovely diamond studs, and various others of gold, white gold, platinum etc and my ears burn after putting them in for a few minutes.

I had an issue with weepy ears, however I wiped all my earrings with hydrogen peroxide. Seemed to harden the skin and haven’t had a problem since

I feel your pain,OP as I had this problem, even with expensive gold or silver earrings. I first had my ears pierced at 15 and had an awful time with them;nearly always sore and regularly had watery weeping or worse, pus weeping (sorry!) from the holes,so much so that I gave up wearing earrings in my late teens and let them close up.
Fast forward 20 odd years and I had them re-pierced (short hairdo!) and was also advised by the lady who pierced my ears (she’s been doing it for a long time,in a tattoo/piercing studio) to use titanium earrings,or failing that, surgical steel ones and preferably labret style (as pp said).

She said metal allergies, even to more solid metals, are quite common but most people who are sensitive to nickel and plated earrings will be fine with titanium. The bonus is that titanium ones aren’t expensive, though admittedly the styles are limited if you go for labret fixings and they are a bit fiddly. With labrets, they don’t poke you in the neck when you sleep and there’s a length of sliding ‘play’ in them, which you don’t get with butterfly backs and this allows the ear some relief from earring pressure on the front and back of the lobe and makes soreness much less likely. Labrets are very comfortable to sleep in.

I wore 10 or 11mm post length labrets for 2 or 3 weeks, then swopped to 8mm post labrets (when the lobes have calmed down and swelling gone) for 2 or 3 weeks after.
I got some threaded titanium ones from Serenity online (as pp above) and some from Piercing Mania online shop. Make sure you search labret earrings,as there’s also labret belly button and nose studs etc.

I also salt washed the pierced holes,(with the labrets still in situ),once or twice a day for a week or two, with cotton buds dipped in a saturated solution of 1 teaspoon of cooking salt in half an eggcup of slightly cooled, boiled water. This was pivotal in removing any soreness caused by body’s reaction to piercing and ?infection and seemed much more effective than savlon or antibacterial spray.

I can now wear any metal (solid or plated) earrings, even with butterfly backs. Every now and again I pop the labrets back in,mainly for comfort. I also choose hoops with a snap type fastening (not butterfly) which makes them a full circle, iykwim, because like labrets, they have some play in them and don’t poke you in the neck when sleeping.
I also have some with a plastic/silicone type butterfly back, which does seem to be less reactive to sensitive ears. (You can buy those type of backs separately online.)

Nickel allergy?

tobee · 03/09/2019 02:38

Mine really vary with reactions; I'm never sure what will cause it; doesn't seem consistent with metal or expense. However, I've bought some rubber backs to use instead of metal backs and that helps. And also drop earrings instead of studs. Smile

sausagedogpookie · 03/09/2019 02:42

I have these, very comfy to sleep in and are what I meant by ‘snap’ closure/fastening. Just wore them most of a 2week holiday,in the sea and pool every day and they fared great, despite being gold vermeil.

Soreness wearing earrings - anyone else? Any tips?
Shoeshelpplease · 06/09/2019 04:49

I went for the earrings mentioned on here and got the 1.2 mm ones as that was the thinnest this particular seller did. They seem to be too thick, a bit thicker than normal earrings and they won't easily go in. I do t want to push too hard and risk irritation.

Any advice?

OP posts:
sausagedogpookie · 06/09/2019 11:44

Shoeshelpplease, the piercer I went to says she always uses 1.2mm thick labrets for new lobe piercings. Might just need a bit of a push first time?

Whatsitlike · 06/09/2019 12:44

When I first had my ears pierced, er quite some time ago...

I was given a piece of advice that I have always followed no matter what kind of earrings I have worn, gold silver cheap as chips everything.

Before putting any earrings in I was told to wet my thumb and index finger with saliva (my own of course!) and wet the earlobe, also do the same with the posts before putting them in my ears.(I tend to roll the posts on my tongue)

Its has worked for me and passed the trick onto others who have had problems with earrings, and if I do forget my ears do sting get sore no matter what the material.

Its odd but I can wear anything. Hope that makes sense!.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 06/09/2019 13:45

@Shoeshelpplease, go back to see that piercer and ask her to put them in for you, using a 1.2mm insertion taper. Should be quick and painless, and she might charge a small fee, but I used to do this for people all the time when I was a piercer.

numberonecook · 06/09/2019 13:49

Me and Dd1 have an allergy so can only wear silver. Even gold sets it off. Dd2 can wear whatever the hell she likes, a rusty nail would not do a thing to that kid lol. I’ve found costing with clear nail varnish helps with drop earrings that thread through but not stud types as the main earring is still in contact with the ear and causes a reaction :(
