How can I stop dresses sticking to my tights aka do people even wear slips nowadays?!

I've lost 4 stone recently and while I'm thrilled with myself I still have a bit of a belly which isn't helped by 3 previous c sections! I've tentatively started climbing out of my comfort zone of leggings/jeans and begun wearing dresses, casual day type, above the knee ones. During the summer I've gone either bare legged or worn 3/4 length leggings but heading into the winter I'd like to wear winter tights and boots under them. The problem is I tried that combo today just to see what it looked like and sone of the dresses had a tendency to stick to the tights which draws attention to my belly and I feel very self conscious. This is all new territory for me and I'm wondering what do people do to combat this. I know my mother would suggest a slip but is that even a thing anymore? All advice appreciated!

You can get anti static spray also, and hair spray on the tights and inside of the dress works too.

That's exactly what a slip is for! And yes people still wear them

I have a tip that works for me. Rub your tights with a tumble drier sheet (bounce or equivalent). Should do the trick. I normally keep some in my drawer at work Grin

I always wear dresses and always wear a slip even in Summer when I don't wear tights.

Slips also make dresses hang better and look better. I normally wear linen, but the improvement is particularly noticeable when you use a slip with thinner fabrics such as cotton, viscose and polyester.

I get those brilliant Cool Comfort ones from M&S.

It's static cling, so you need to find a way to thwart the static. It's the bane of my life where I live, because it's around - 15 C all winter and brutally dry.

I just rub body lotion into my tights/socks/whatever. This works on the same principle as dryer sheets - you're adding moisture. I keep a small tube of lotion in my bag so that I can apply more as needed. It's annoying.

I had this once - I have a safety pin inside the hem of my dress, it diffuses the static and no more clinging.

I use Tumble dryer sheets. If you rub one over your tights when you are getting dressed, it stops it.

I also try to avoid dresses that are made out of static attracting material. If you are wearing boots, you could also wear leggings rather than tights. I actually prefer leggings to tights under a short skirt so they give a bit more coverage.

I wear slips! Vintage ones, preferably silk, from the 30s and 40s. They work wonders and make me feel a little like Liz Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Plus they are beautiful so if something peeks out that's fine.

I get mine on Etsy.

Microfibre slips from John Lewis.

ChippyMinton · 02/09/2019 07:00

Slips, yes! Try M&S for a range of lengths and colours. I prefer the dress style rather than skirt style to get a smooth outline rather than having waistband.

gerispringer · 02/09/2019 07:03

You can try rubbing your tights with a metal coat hanger. It stops static.
Or buy a couple of slips. Don’t get polyester ones, get natural fibres.

Delighted to hear slips are still a thing, I honestly hadn't seen or heard of them since I was a child (although to be fair I've never actually looked!). Some great tips about using the tumble dryer sheets, metal hanger or hair spray, I'll give those a go until I get a chance to go to M and S or the like . Thanks, I knew I'd find the answer here ;)
