Blonde highlights back to brown

A couple of weeks ago I had my naturally dark hair highlighted blonde at the hairdressers. I went for a full head and it is very blonde. I just can't get used to it, don't think it suits me, don't like the lack of shininess or want to deal with the maintenance now that I've had it done.

Can I simply buy a dark brown dye from the supermarket and do it myself? I realise the blonde may start to come back through eventually in which case I would need to do it again? How regularly would I expect this to happen? I wash it twice a week usually.

Any hints or tips?

Feel guilty going back to the hairdressers for it doing as it was very expensive and have only had it done for two weeks.

Don't get me wrong, she has done an excellent job and I'm glad I went for it as it's something I have wanted to do for a long time but it's just not "me".

I wouldn't put a dark dye over new highlights, it may turn khaki. Why don't you embrace it for a couple of months, then once you have some root regrowth add some low lights to tone it down.

It's risky to do a whole head of bleach blonde overlaid with a brown hair dye. Some people it would be ok on and others wouldn't, it depends on lots of factors.

I personally would get low lights professionally done (maybe dark ash blonde) put in to tone it down/break it up a bit, then leave it alone. Blonde gets duller over time anyway so the brightness will fade. I wouldn't feel guilty about putting low lights in after an expensive job either, it's your hair, you have to wear it every day. Anyway, low lights should mean you don't need your hair redoing for a while as it will blend in more with the regrowth.

Don't forget to find a suitable hair mask as bleached hair can be a lot more delicate. No rough rubbing or brushing, be gentle with it.

Would you mind posting a photo?

It might look nicer if you get your root area tinted back to your natural colour, some people (me included) prefer a bit of a root instead of stark blonde, with some highlights to break it up (more of a balayage look)

As well as suggestions above take a look at your makeup - whenever i change my hair colour I find I need a different blusher and lipstick to balance out the change in hair.

Wait another 2 weeks OP. You'll have regrowth and I actually quite like some roots against blonde.

If not, get some lowlights through it

I would not DIY!

I go from dark to blonde - and back again - quite often. If you want to do it at home you need to put a red dye on it first. If you stick a brown on blonde it'll just turn green. So red, then dark. You can do it over a couple of days, but I tend to give it a few weeks in between dying. Make sure you buy enough dye if you have long hair.
I'm currently dark after being blonde since January. No doubt I'll change it again soon, but it if you're not used to colouring your own hair it might be best to go back to the hairdresser. X
