I’m fed up of Henna. Although it felt lovely, I have a lot more greys now.
Please can I ask for cruelty free hair colour brands? I cannot afford regular salon so it has to be suitable for DIY.

Umberto Gianni have a new vegan hair dye out. I've used it and got really nice coverage. Might be worth a try.

Are you looking for Permenant or Semi-P

I use Superdrug own brand , used to use the Permenant one but then got the dreaded regrowth after 3 weeks .

I use the Semi P now , it lasts pretty well and root regrowth is less glaring.

Do a strand test if you're dyeing over henna , there can be a reaction.

And go lighter than you think. I use a 7.73 and my hair is mid brown.
A shade 6 on me looks way too dark.

I like the look of the Umberto Gianni but I'd need a semi-p

If you used proper henna, you need to do a strand test before using an oxidising colour. Cut off a few small strands of hair and apply your tint mixture and sit it on a glass or ceramic dish (not metal) and wait for 30-45 minutes.
If it reacts at all such as getting warm/bubbling/fizzing then you must not go ahead with colouring your hair, otherwise you risk your hair breaking off close to the roots.

If you visit a salon, make sure they know you put henna on your hair.
It's almost impossible to fully remove henna so in most cases, you'll need to let it grow out.

Organic Colour Systems (sometimes on Amazon),
Daniel Field Watercolours,
Superdrug own brand,
Josh Wood (Boots or own website),
Knight and Wilson Colour Freedom (Superdrug)

Oh wow, Superdrug own brand is cruelty free? Very impressed!

Yes Superdrug products carry the Leaping Rabbit .

I always double check (on several sites) there's a load of conflicting advice . And some products which are Vegan aren't always Cruelty Free , just no beeswax or honey for example.

Tints of Nature permanent colour. This is ammonia free I've been using it for years but have to say recently it's not covered my grey completely but think it's maybe hormone related as only happened since I hit 50. Daniel Field is very good but doesn't contain peroxide so only able to darken or add warmer tones. These come out quite dark I would advise speaking to their customer service for shade advice they are excellent.

All superdrug's own brand products are cruelty free @RedRose55

Catmar · 03/09/2019 20:20

Oh, and be extra careful before colouring over henna @RedRose55 as apparently it can react badly with chemical hair dye - although I made the switch a few years ago when henna wasn't covering my greys well enough and it was fine.

RedRose55 · 03/09/2019 22:21

@Catmar I used Lush henna. I’ll do a patch test just to be safe

You need to do both a skin patch text and an incompatibility test with strands of hair from different parts of the head.

I use Superdrug's own brand. It's really good. I wish they had more colours but it's the only cruelty free brand I know
