Can I wear a black dress to a wedding?

My sister said I would look more dressed for a funeral. What is the situation with black dresses for weddings? It’s off the shoulder and tight and I was going to wear a fascinator
Thanks

@BubblesBuddy are you for real? Do you honestly think we're all meant to be dressed the same?! My own wedding was an amazing mix of eclectic outfits, some traditional, some really not at all, everyone looked amazing!
I'm seriously worried for you, if you truly think we should be looking at the clothes that folk wore to a royal wedding (or Ascot!!) for 'guidance' GrinGrin

velocitygirl7 · 01/09/2019 09:12

Op, you're pregnant (congratulations!) wear whatever you feel good and comfortable in. Your original outfit sounds lovely!

BuffaloCauliflower · 01/09/2019 09:15

I think it’s rude to wear black to weddings, means you disapprove. This might be an outdated view but it is always my initial reaction

Ineedtoknowit · 01/09/2019 09:31

I never understand all the messages that an outfit is apparently giving at weddings. People don’t wear black to weddings because they disapprove of the match, that’s like something from Jane Austen times! Perhaps they just like black and struggle with colour?! I know loads of people who only ever wear black

linentowel · 01/09/2019 09:47

Black is fine. Wear what you like really. It’s an invite not a demand. Obviously don’t wear a wedding dress though.

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 01/09/2019 09:57

I always wear black to weddings! I think it is fine. I normally wear a beige pashmina and jewellery too - I think I look chic and not funeral like.
The only things I was offended with at my own wedding was white and someone wore a really low cut and short red mini dress which was pretty revealing and inappropriate.

Babayaggatheboneylegged · 01/09/2019 10:00

Would it have passed muster at Prince Harry’s wedding? If not, it’s a No. Just not appropriate.

This has got to be the funniest thing I’ve ever read on MN.

AuntieMarys · 01/09/2019 10:06

And this is why I don't go to weddings.. the palarver of dress codes. Heels, fascinaters, pashminas, little bags Grin

midsomermurderess · 01/09/2019 11:54

Is Bubbles having a laugh? If not suitable for Price Harry's do, it's inappropriate? She must be.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 01/09/2019 12:34

I've worn a tux (black) with heels to quite a few weddings, I think it's absolutely fine these days.

Elieza · 01/09/2019 13:10

Monochrome is always stylish. Enjoy Smile

AuntieStella · 01/09/2019 13:39

Stylish is however not a synonym for 'suitable for this occasion'

Ineedtoknowit · 01/09/2019 13:57

The days are long gone when black is just a funeral colour. I think it’s just old fashioned to say it’s not appropriate to wear at a wedding. Plenty of people wear black all the time which wasn’t the case in times gone by, so in the past it may have been inappropriate for weddings but not now if it’s not worn in a somber way

CrazyHorse · 01/09/2019 19:19

I would usually say no to black at a wedding, but I went to a similar wedding, late afternoon in a hotel in the winter.

I'd put in weight and had nothing else that fitted and could face shopping, so I texted the bride to ask if she minded me wearing black ( I was doing a reading)

She said she didn't care what I wore as long as I was there. And she meant it.

kenandbarbie · 01/09/2019 19:20

Depends what it's like and how you accessorize it I think.

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 01/09/2019 19:42

Black has never been funerals only.

It has never been appropriate for weddings though. There are plenty of colours in which one can look just as stylish, and not make a gaffe. It's not an old-fashioned rule, it's still going strong (even though some people do not mind breaches). Plain black is not stylish at a wedding, no matter how accessorised, and predominantly black is better avoided too. Ditto white and near/white, and for some cultures, red.

rosedream · 02/09/2019 07:33

I think you can at a wedding that isn't held in a church. I think your outfit sounds beautiful.

BubblesBuddy · 02/09/2019 08:23

So pictures of the most stylish people at the most stylish events are not even worth looking at for inspiration? No wonder we are a less than chic and appropriately dressed nation. Quite sad really.

Ineedtoknowit · 02/09/2019 08:45

You didn’t say inspiration though bubbles, you said if it didn’t pass muster at Prince Harry’s wedding then it was inappropriate

Youngandfree · 02/09/2019 08:48

Yes! I have as I was pregnant and felt shite! And I have when not pregnant, honestly I can’t remember if anyone wore black to my wedding...why?...because I didn’t give a crap as it was my wedding day. I don’t think anyone will REALLY care. So go ahead and wear it if it’s what you want to wear!! 👍

LadyGAgain · 02/09/2019 08:57

Black is absolutely fine IMO.

rookiemere · 02/09/2019 08:59

I wouldn't but Fergie did at Ellie Gouldings wedding so maybe it's ok.
