Please help me get my hair back to being soft and shiny!

My hair used to be so soft and shiny - these days it’s rather dry and dull. It’s quite long - and I have to colour regularly as I have so much grey!
I’m 35 if that makes a difference and feel like it changed loads after having my son 2 years ago. For example - it used to be dead straight and is now really wavy! Weird.
Any wonder products out there?

I've just started using the Herbal Essence Bio Renew shampoo and conditioner. The bourbon and manuka honey one. Not only does it smell great but my hair is so soft and shiny.

ethelfleda · 31/08/2019 10:49

Thanks plump
Anyone tried frizzease??

The ends of my hair were dry and sundamaged so yesterday I drenched them in Original Sprout Deep Conditioner and now its nice and soft again.

HisBetterHalf · 31/08/2019 10:52

Frizzease is ok. Mane and tail is quite good and pantene

WeeM · 31/08/2019 10:56

My hair is more wavy now too! I like to embrace it occasionally in the summer with a beach hair spray and just diffuse it dry a bit. I’ve heard great things about Philip Kingsley elasticizer...I’ve got a free sample coming with a look fantastic order so will give that a go.

Argan oil after washing - and in between. Gamechanger for my menopausal hair ie dry and wiry

Mumoftoo19 · 31/08/2019 11:10

I use Moroccan Oil. I have quite fine hair so I use the light one. I stripped my hair the other day and afterwards it felt like straw. I used a couple of pumps of said oil on dry hair and it felt lovely again. I brought a garnier 98% natural conditioner yesterday (half price in boots) it feels and smells lovely. I try to buy shampoo and conditioner with no sulphate, parabens or silicones. My hair is always quite soft.

Soola · 31/08/2019 11:18

Percy & Reed products.

MrDarcysMa · 31/08/2019 20:17

OGX hair oil. apply to lengths and ends before drying and comb through. I have long (Lightened) hair and it is in good condition. Maybe get a trim more often too.

Teddybear45 · 31/08/2019 20:20

You need to treat the hair you have, not the hair you want. That might mean using the curly girl method and also darkening your hair using natural dyes like mehendi or indigo rather than lightening it; or letting it go grey.

stayathomer · 31/08/2019 20:25

Macadamia oil, less than a tenner online and is as good as moroccanoil!! Use your conditioner as a masc so leave in 20 minutes before you wash out. I live by frizzease!!(am 39) whatever shampoo you use match the conditioner, that made a big difference to me!

stayathomer · 31/08/2019 20:29

Ps alpaparf curly wavy hair shampoo is 15euro and masc is similar, it saved my hair if you can afford it, these and the macadamia oil and frizzease are my go tos!!!

stayathomer · 31/08/2019 20:30

Oh and a heat defence spray is so important!!( going now!!!)

Wurzelsnewhead · 31/08/2019 20:34

I have thick coarse hair that’s turning grey and has been bleached (badly) leaving it in a terrible state. Over the last few weeks I’ve been using castor oil as a leave in mask for a couple of hours before washing then elasticiser alongside argon oil as a leave in conditioner . Leaves it non frizzy, soft and shiny.

Wurzelsnewhead · 31/08/2019 20:35

Argan 😂

Mummaofmytribe · 31/08/2019 20:38

Olaplex. Research which numbers you need. I have 3,4,5,6.
3 a pre conditioner use once a week.
6 a leave in mask once a week.
4 snd 5 shampoo and conditioner.
Really expensive but you need only use a tiny amount each time, it lasts ages.
Game changer for for my late 40s, thick, dry, frizzy, previously over coloured hair.

EleanorofCastile · 31/08/2019 20:46

Elasticizer is the only thing that works for me!

Mixingitall · 31/08/2019 20:52

My hair sounds similar to yours. At the weekend I rub olive oil in the ends and leave on for an hour before washing. I try not to use any products with SLS in it, and use a tiny amount of coconut oil on my ends after drying. Is your hair dryer on a low setting? Try not to wash your hair every day. I trim my hair every 8 weeks and use an organic dye.

mellicauli · 31/08/2019 22:22

Condition first Combing it with a very fine comb, then shampoo. If you can use soft water it makes all the difference,

Cobblersandhogwash · 31/08/2019 23:20

Take biotin.

Use Olaplex too.

ethelfleda · 01/09/2019 09:25

Thanks all
I think there is biotin in my Only wash my hair 2 -3 times a week and actually rarely blow dry it these days. I will try to get it trimmed more regularly too Smile

ethelfleda · 01/09/2019 09:32

I like the look of Olaplex too. More research needed!

QueenJulian · 01/09/2019 10:55

Are your iron levels ok? My hair goes dull and dry when mine are low. Olaplex 3 also seems to work on me.

HobbyIsCodeForDogging · 01/09/2019 16:33

I've found my hair changing over time too, it's not nearly as smooth and shiny as it used to be naturally. I do colour it a lot more now to cover greys.

Last night I finally tried the sample of Percy and Reed wonder overnight recovery. The effects today are amazing. I'm going to try the same principle with some other products I've got lurking around - apply generously to dry hair in the evening then shampoo and condition in the morning - and buy more of whatever one works best so I can make it a regular treatment.
