How can I not be boring?

ParmesanOfVirtue · 29/08/2019 21:53

I wear mainly black jeans with white or black t shirts. Sometimes I add a belt.

In warm weather I wear grey Birkenstock toe post sandals, in cooler weather silver plimsolls, and in winter black of brown boots (plus coat if necessary etc..)

I looked at some colourful tops the other day (pink/blue/ yellow abstract pattern) and wondered if it would be better to wear something like that.

I just tend to wear black & white all the time.

Am I boring?

Gotta love a pair of black jeans but you're missing out on so many fun options of clothing. What about summer dresses or skirts and tights in the winter? I am far from the best dressed but I love trying different clothes and finding something new to feel great in. I can't imagine wearing the same style every day gives you that 'i feel great today!' feeling. But if it does, no need to change 😁

KellyHall · 29/08/2019 22:01

If you look good and you're comfortable I'd say you have your own style, I wouldn't call you boring.

But if you want to incorporate more variety in to your wardrobe, take a few hours/preferably a clear day to hit the shops. Just take a bunch of stuff you wouldn't normally buy in to the changing room and see if it makes you feel good seeing yourself wearing any of it. If it does, buy it!

Lumene · 29/08/2019 22:45

No you aren’t boring.

Are you happy? Do you want to change your style?

You could try totally different clothing options - eg dresses, harem pants etc etc.

Or slightly different - eg add a slogan t-shirt, add a biker jacket etc

Or different accessories to mix up your current look and make it more interesting/fun - jewellery, bags, shoes, etc

A personal shop at eg John Lewis could be a good start?

Do you want to wear more colour? It’s not mandatory. Do you feel boring?

Try stuff on. It’s just clothing. Maybe texture if you feel your current outfits are dull but you don’t feel good in colour.

StCharlotte · 30/08/2019 12:37

Well it does sound a bit unimaginative (says the Queen of Navy Blue!). I have a colleague who wears much the same, but she does wear different sorts of tops (still usually black or white) so there is a bit of variety. But, judging by her wardrobe and our conversations, she's just not that interested. Are you?

chasingseagulls · 30/08/2019 12:52

Not boring at all. Unintentionally minimalist if you must pick a label maybe and add yourself to the "what is your style" thread ;)

By all means try different colours, nothing wrong with spending a few hours in changing rooms experimenting.

Or how about look at different textures, fabrics and cuts in your usual black and white instead? Cos are very good at neutral colours but lots of their clothes have unusual draping, cuts and shapes which elevate a normal top to something more interesting.

RubySlippers77 · 30/08/2019 13:02

My friend was the same as you OP - wasn't sure of her 'style' after years of wearing uniform/ 'mum' clothes! She split up with her DH and decided she fancied a change, starting with a personal shopper at Debenhams. She's completely not the sort of person that usually enjoys things like that, but said it was really useful, helped her try lots of different colours and styles she wouldn't have considered. It was free too Grin

Keep the black/white tshirts and jeans and use accessories to liven it up with colourful shoes, bags, scarves, jumpers and coats. Good quality plain basics look really classy.

Supersimkin · 30/08/2019 13:41

Start small. Keep the white tee shirts and buy a skirt. The current lot of midis are delightfully easy to wear and more comfortable than jeans. Wear it at home so you get used to it. Then go out and enjoy the swishy feeling.

ParmesanOfVirtue · 30/08/2019 13:59

I don't really like colours, that's the problem. I don't mind them in very small doses, eg belts, earrings.

But I'd never wear a whole orange or green item for example.

I think they look nice on other people but I don't seem to feel comfortable wearing colours. I don't know if it's just because I've become used to black & white; or if other colours are just "not me".

Super- I don't kind skirts - again I don't know why. I think they look nice on other people and on modelling shots, but if I buy one I end up never wearing it and having to get rid, so feel it's a waste.

I'm only 5'4 also, so maxi skirts (my preference) are very maxi,

StCharlotte, yes I'm interested.

I bought 7 basic items from H&M the other day
2x white tees
2x black tees
1x beige v neck sweater
1x Black v neck sweater in same style
1 x black joggers (very nice actually, comparable to Hush and about 1/8 of the price...)

Ooh I'd have a play with shapes on top - attached some examples I think look gorgeous but are easy to wear.

Shirts half tucked in at the front and vest tops that fit loosely can really give some oomph to jeans and flat shoes.

If you have the funds and you find something that fits beautifully, get a couple of colours so you can mix it up buy have a few options you know will look great.

I know you said you have Birkenstocks but these outfits also suit other flats especially converse or flyknits.

And if you're confident walking in them they also look great with flatforms and wedges.

Ooh nice watch, delicate jewellery you can layer and some sunnies too - they can really help make an outfit look "finished".

Most important thing is to be comfortable obviously, just some thoughts Smile

ParmesanOfVirtue · 30/08/2019 14:15

Thatcurly- the shirt in the second pic is nicely styled. I do the half tucking in thing sometimes.

I've only ever seen Yoko Ono in black and I don't think anyone would call her style boring.
I'm not sure how she does it though. There might be a lot of interesting shapes, fabrics, textures going on, like chasingseagulls says.

Or there's the minimalist approach of hunting down The perfect pair of black jeans and T shirt and then buying in multiples.

Neither are boring but I wouldn't call them easy either.

chasingseagulls · 30/08/2019 16:37

Well you bought a beige sweater, I was going to suggest trying brown and khaki green. By brown I don't mean chocolate dark brown, but muted shades like very dark creamy mushroom, taupe, beige, camel..these are still "neutral" and go well with black and white.. I've seen a lot of this toffee shade of brown in the shops too which I think is lovely.

Khaki green trousers would be good maybe? Chinos style are jean level casual and would look great with a black or white t shirt.

I love your style, mine is similar, except I do wear colour and I love dresses.

How about spice it up with jewellery? I have some "signature" necklaces & a bracelet & a few watches. I don't really wear rings, except my engagement ring

Gentlemanwiththistledownhair · 31/08/2019 09:06

As a fellow shortie, I find lots of the current midi dresses are maxi on me. So I buy those as maxis! If you avoid the flouncy pleated ones and go for something tube-like they're so slimming and lengthening: make me look so much taller. As 5"4, they tend to stop at my ankle bone, which is where this season's maxis seem to fall on the model too. Perhaps try some on?

Otherwise I can't really comment, my clothing tends towards being too colourful! The opposite to you, I don't like myself in black or white. I find black with a "pop if colour" quite old fashioned looking as well. So i've just accepted that the things that make my heart sing are colours! (Although mixed with a healthy dose of khaki / navy: I'm not a walking rainbow)

If neutrals and monochrome make your heart sing, then stick with it and I will envy your classy-ness from afar! Wink
