I have awful anxiety about hairdressers so cut my own hair. I have proper hairdressing scissors and have done so since I was 17 (now 32). Never deviated away from “style” which is just a basic side part with a bit of a fringe. My hair is super fine and sparse and chin length and has never been longer than shoulder length as it just goes like rats tails.

About 5 years ago I home bleached which resulted in lots of snapping and that “chewing gum” hair. It was awful. I’ve spent literally years trying to grow it out. The top layers of my hair were the worst off, there was points that were maybe an inch long.

Now it never grew quickly before, and I know it’s technically growing as I see roots, but it never gets any longer. Layers are now roughly to the top of my ears in length, but they’ve stayed there for the past couple of years. It’s really starting to affect me now. I can’t wear my hair down as it looks weird because the bottom layers of hair are too thin it almost looks like a mullet.

I genuinely have to use those little tiny plastic bands (that are meant for little plaits) as my regular bobbles as I have so little hair, and I know this is damaging but I have to backcomb it to put in any sort of style as it’s so floppy and soft it just sort of flops straight down it’s as flat as a pancake.

I’m genuinely getting upset about it lately and I’m getting married in 9 months so i really do need something done about it.

Can anyone recommend any hair treatments to thicken / make my hair grow? I’ve tried all the standard thickening shampoos and sprays. I heat protect my hair every time, and try was at least every other day, although the day I don’t wash it I have to use dry shampoo as it looks greasy immediately. I am trying to work on my anxiety to make an appointment with a hairdresser.

Would it help your anxiety to have a hairdresser come to you? So you're at least more comfortable in your own home.

Hi OP my hair is really thin too (20 years of bleaching!) I have been using Plantur 21 shampoo and Bioton tablets for about a year. It has made a difference to my hair.

I think a home hair dresser would exacerbate it to be honest lol!

Thanks for the recommendations for the shampoo and biotin. I regular took biotin for a while but didn’t seem to see an improvement in my hair (my nails went crazy though). Might try again.

I’ve been looking at olaplex on amazon but not sure I can justify the cost, which is another reason I tend to stay away from the hair dresser!
