How to reduce amount of clothes in wardrobe when you like it all- tips please

I need to have less ‘stuff’, it’s driving me crazy. I feel overwhelmed and want things to be simpler so I figured having less clothes is a good start. However I like everything I have, it all fits and most of it is quite classic so not particularly out of style etc.
I don’t wear it all though, but I am finding it hard to apart with anything! Anyone been in this situation and happy to share tips? I need all the help I can get 😆

I am in the same position. I try and clear out but put most of it back. Sorry I've no advice but watching with interest

Bringonspring · 25/08/2019 19:58

I’m watching with interest, I hate ‘having styff’

Bringonspring · 25/08/2019 19:59

Stuff

I would start with something else then, and instead find good storage that makes it feel organised and containable.

If you really want to tackle it, I found the Marie Kondo books really helpful.

nitgel · 25/08/2019 20:00

Have you put winter stuff away ? I use those vacuum bags to store jumpers. Its not great tbh Grin

Mixingitall · 25/08/2019 20:03

Is it all in colours that suit you? I have a minimal wardrobe, 1.5 metres and 3 drawers, and only buy clothes in my colours. I pack my winter and summer clothes away at the end of the season.

Northernsoullover · 25/08/2019 20:05

I'm exactly the same. My wardrobe is full but I genuinely love everything in it. I don't wear any of it but I will need the clothes as I will be in a professional role... in 2021 Hmm however like you it is all classic and won't date. If you genuinely love it then you haven't bought badly. I'd feel more guilty if it were full of fast fashion I was glad to see the back of.

CharDeeMacDennis · 25/08/2019 20:05

I'm the same - Ive cleared out everything I don't like / don't wear / doesn't fit properly, and I still have too many clothes, but now I like them all Blush

WineIsMyCarb · 25/08/2019 20:07

Is it unhelpful to say 'start wearing it'? IVe just moved to a 'smart' town and am starting to wear stuff I would have reserved for 'relaxed dinner out' for daytime clothes when about in town.
Not useful for jumpers in this weather or corporates Work trousers/dresses etc.

LemonGingerCakes · 25/08/2019 20:08

Don’t buy stuff. Sort out a slimmed down wardrobe. Store the other half. Wear the slimmed down wardrobe until it wears out and gradually replace with the stored stuff. Over time your clothes will reduce to a manageable amount.

AndromedaPerseus · 25/08/2019 20:08

I’d rotate it choose 6 of each item wear for a month then choose another 6. Store items in separate containers to make selection easier

Kyriesmum1 · 25/08/2019 20:11

Put all you clothes in wardrobe with hangers the wrong way round then as you wear stuff and put it back out the hangers the right way round. After a few months all the items on hangers facing the wrong way are the ones you haven't worn! That's how I clear out mine (and hubby) clothes. After six months I get rid of everything that hasn't been worn.

BanjoStarz · 25/08/2019 20:14

You need to shop your stash.

Create an autumn wardrobe, store the rest, then shop your stash for winter wardrobe, repeat for spring and summer.

Don’t buy anything new until you’re sure you don’t have that thing or can’t create the look from existing items you have.

BikeRunSki · 25/08/2019 20:14

Every garment must go with at least 2 other things.

LaPampa · 25/08/2019 20:17

I try and swap proper seasonal stuff into boxes and the next season anything I didn’t wear last season I try and move on unless properly sentimental. Eg the very hot summer we had last year, and I went abroad to the med too, I figured if I hadn’t worn it then I probably never would. So I sold stuff on eBay that I liked and in colours that suited me, but I hadn’t worn in two summers.

Also echo the “stop shopping” ethos. If you stop adding to it, and actually get rid of worn out things, hopefully it will gradually reduce.

Mind you, I’ve stopped working in a corporate office since I went freelance and I’m still holding on to not very exciting formal work clothes because they’re not worn out and still fit.

FaithInfinity · 25/08/2019 20:20

Well there’s no point in keeping the stuff you’re not wearing! I’d recommend getting a colour analysis done so you know what really suits you. I’m totally streamlined my wardrobe but now I know what suits me. I don’t buy as much but I’m more confident in my choices. For example I had a nice jacket but I never got round to wearing it. I realised it wasn’t a good colour on me or my style so I’ve put it to charity shop it. If some of your nice stuff is in good condition try selling it on instead.

Popetthetreehugger · 25/08/2019 20:20

Get everything out , the heap will be eye opening , now sort in to types .... just how many of each thing do you need ? Keep only the best . Bag the rest and put straight in to boot . You will feel so much better !

Hospitalexpert · 25/08/2019 20:22

Sort and pack seasons. If you have enough space push everything to one side of the cupboard/wardrobe. Move over the ones you use. Every x time (you set duration) the rest goes to charity.

Huntlybyelection · 25/08/2019 20:25

Why aren't you wearing the clothes? If it's just being in a rut, then pack away the old faithful and wear the other stuff.

Tryingtogetitright · 25/08/2019 20:33

I was going to say what popethetreehugger said - put piles of like with like. Eg do you really need eight black jumpers? Can you just keep one or two?

Another idea is to pair all your separates into outfits, keep 14(?) out and put the rest away in the loft?

Engoltheharpy · 25/08/2019 20:35

If you like it all why is a lot of it not been worn?

Catmar · 25/08/2019 21:12

Work your way through your clothes and wear them all. Any that you don't want to wear more on more than a couple of occasions - get rid.

Craftycorvid · 25/08/2019 21:19

Watching with interest as this is defo’ my affliction too! Lemonginger I’ve tried this method (using things up bit by bit then getting more out of storage) but I just keep sneaking the bits out of storage anyway. Blush

imtakingabath · 25/08/2019 21:22

I usually try to think whether I’ve worn items in the past year/2 years - if you haven’t, you can’t like them that much! If you really feel like you do like them, try to find occasions to wear them and see how they make you feel.

Accountant222 · 25/08/2019 21:32

I'm in a similar position with my clothes, I have tonnes. Last year I charity shopped a load of them as I was moving house. I'm keeping them all, they fit and I don't buy cheap clothes. I'm just not buying new ones, might need a couple of pairs of trousers for winter but that's all.
