After 20 years of daily straightening my hair I’m thinking of going cold turkey?

Anything I need to know? I’m dreading it because I’m useless at styling it, but I don’t think my hair can take it any more. My hair is increasingly grey so I need to colour it so I’m keen to minimise the damage?Anyone else done the same? Are there any products that would help me? I was and condition every day plus use a smoothing product to try to reduce the frizz

It’ll look shit tbh. I tried all this curly haired stuff, even on its best days which were few and far between I could have spent an hour doing my hair and it looked like I’d just got out of bed

Ha! Thanks for not sugaring the pill!

I was in your position this time last year. I went cold turkey and have only used straighteners for one night out and one wedding in 12 months. It was a frizzy, straw-like mess and I've survived on messy buns.

But now I wash my hair and leave it, arriving at work with reasonably good wavy hair that looks quite presentable.

Invest in a good silk pillow! If I use a cotton one my hairs like a cave man when I wake up and need to wash and style again! However, with the silk pillow I wake up and it's still smooth and just needs a quick brush and a spritz of dry shampoo. Maybe try that and cut the use of straighteners! Also M&S sell a product called WOW. It's like a spray that you use of damp hair before drying and styling. It's incredible! It's expensive but genuinely a wonder product!

It will also be dry and frizzy because you're washing every day, your hair sometimes needs the natural oil to keep it hydrated- y'know?

MrsGrindah · 25/08/2019 16:27

Thanks allyWill definitely try the WOW stuff and a silk pillow. Makes sense

No worries! Report back!

This is the spray here!

You'll get a half decent silk pillow case for about £20-40 quid.

I did this a couple of years ago except I stopped using straighteners, hairdryer and curlers but I still dye my hair (the roots) monthly. I found that because my hair is dyed, it's not as smooth as my natural hair was and honestly I'm considering returning to straightening or curling it more often at the moment because of the frizz. Having said that I am happier that I've stopped using heat on my hair and I have cut down on time trying to get my hair dry and styled.

To help keep my hair smoother and look less damaged from the dye, I use Bleach London's hair mask but recently have started using Pantene 3 minute miracle mask as it's cheaper. I also used to use Ogx shampoo and conditioner but have now moved onto Lush shampoo and above conditioner because of price again.

Because my hair doesn't look as polished without some sort of processing done to it, I wear an Alice band during the day so it looks like some sort of effort has been made. I also do a french braid, pony tail, bun, fringe braid, half up half down hair etc from time to time too to shake things up. I also put my hair in plaits when it's slightly wet so it has a better wave in it when dry.

I did no straighteners last summer and embraced the curls. It was easy when it was warm but not when it was cold and wet.
Now, I've got a Dyson airwrap so don't use straighteners anymore.
Also I used kerastase shampoo and conditioner which is beautiful!
Both have definitely improved my hair

ferneytorro · 26/08/2019 14:30

Can i suggest you try the Keratin Complex Intelligent blowdry. It doesn't make your hair straight more frizz free. I'm on week 5 of not straightening mine and it helps you get used to not straightening it which I think is half the battle to be honest as you then start to realise the world won't end if you don't have straight hair.

ferneytorro · 26/08/2019 14:31

Oh and watch the Kathy Burke documentary on women and glamour - she will help you not give two fucks about what you look like!

ZaraW · 26/08/2019 15:04

I did curly girl for two years. 10% of the time my hair looked amazing, but mostly it looked unkempt and a mess. I went back to straightening and look so much better.

PammieDooveOrangeJoof · 26/08/2019 21:44

I stopped using straighteners a while back and dig out my Babylon’s big hair from the depths of my wardrobe.. smooths my hair and give it much more body without burning it to a crisp. Looks in much better condition now. I rough dry it with a hair dryer and then finish it off with the babyliss. I’ve had more compliments on my hair than ever.

goose1964 · 27/08/2019 10:29

A tangle teaser rather than a normal brush.

NoTheresa · 27/08/2019 10:43

I have pretty straight hair but I envy those who have naturally curly hair. They always look much prettier when they let their real hair do its thing. Michelle Obama is a great example.

NoTheresa · 27/08/2019 10:50

This is stunning...
