Safari clothes - especially shoes

I’d love any types for a overland Safari in Botswana, especially shoes. Would my good running trainers be best, or my fairly heavy walking boots? I don’t really want to buy a new pair.

Are you walking a lot or will you be in a jeep? I went and barely walked anywhere Grin

Some walking, bush walk and one night camping.

I should think either would do. I’d probably go for the trainers if they’re sufficiently comfortable. (I usually wear closed-toe trekking sandals.)

Do you have a luggage weight limit? The small planes that fly in and out of safari areas often have a much lower weight limit (15 kilos or so) than those for the international airlines. That may influence your packing.

As for clothes, I’d recommend natural fibres and light or “natural” colours. Khaki or shades of green are a bit of a cliche but they blend well with the environment. Avoid dark colours, especially blue or black as they attract mosquitoes and tsetse flies. (To be fair, I don’t know if tsetse flies are a problem in Botswana; my experience is of East Africa and Mozambique.)

Long trousers and sleeves will protect you from biting insects, thorns and the sun.

A good hat is essential; one with a chinstrap will stop it flying off as you bounce over rough ground in an open-topped Jeep.

Finally, don’t forget socks and a warm sweater and/or fleece. It can get surprisingly cold when the sun goes down. You may also be thankful for the socks as extra protection from mosquitoes (tuck trousers into socks and spray clothing with a Deet-impregnated repellant.)

Have a brilliant time!
