Verdict on my keratin blowdry

Background: I have highlighted thick wavy hair. If I blow-dry it, I look like Phil Spector. I spent a lot of money on the blow-dry in the hope of getting straight hair. I use expensive sulphate free shampoo and conditioner ad I stick religiously to not washing, touching, moving it for the 3 days after the treatment.
I was disappointed that I still need to straighten it. It’s just as curly after a wash. Should it be? I feel a bit conned.
The marginal upside is that it’s now more Noddy Holder than Phil Spector. I find that it takes less time to straighten and once straight it remains that way until I next wash it.
On balance, I don’t think it was worth the money as I still have curly hair. I would do it again, but maybe a cheap DIY version, if that’s possible.

Is it smoother, less frizzy? I used to do these at home and thought they did a good job BUT it ends up damaging your hair a lot so I had to stop unfortunately, I wish there was one available without the side effects. Afaik though, it’s job is to smooth rather than straighten the hair.

Sorry to hear yours didn't work as well as you hoped.

I did my first treatment 5 days ago and like you I have thick wavy highlighted hair. I was actually hoping to keep the volume and wave and just have softer, smoother hair. It's softer alright but after the first wash it's still poker straight and feels really lank. It's driving me nuts and I just want my volume and waves back.

A keratin blow-dry isn’t for straightening your hair, it’s to smooth and de-frizz and cut blow-drying time. It doesn’t change the texture of your hair. I think it’s Yuko (if anyone still does it - I remember reading it was quite damaging/not that great) if you want straightening effect.

OnlineAlienator · 24/08/2019 08:34

Yeah i think theyre just for smoothening rather than straightening, and if your hair is super thivk curls you will need industrial levels of straightening! Mine is open minded never actually does what you want and straightens quite a bit with a keratin blower but can go v curly if encouraged. Maybe call it quits and go with the curl, try curlygirl method??

ZaraW · 24/08/2019 13:05

I have very curly frizzy hair and my BB left my hair very lank and lifeless. Five months on it's no longer straight when wet but back to being curly. It is very easy to get it straight though. I only wash it a couple of times a week so I got good value from it.

I did it myself on advice from here - the one from amazon, has anyone else tried this?

Eledamorena · 25/08/2019 06:53

I had my first one last year and LOVED the result - my hair dried really quickly and was smooth, and straighter than usual (but not really straight, which I didn't want anyway). It would have been v quick to blow-dry and/or straighten. Lots of compliments... I think people thought I had suddenly learned how to do my hair!

I've since had it done twice more, by the same guy, and it just didn't have the same effect. It was like a really nice blow-dry and a bit less frizzy, but not worth the time or cost.

I think I might just do it once a year for a change but not regularly, in the hope it works more on untreated hair.

I suppose I could also just learn how to actually dry my own hair properly but I live in a very humid place so the battle would be constant!! Currently embracing beach waves, but they never look how I want either!

MissCharleyP · 26/08/2019 09:40

I also found the same as Eledamorena, first one I was raving about to anyone who’s listen. I’ve had about 5/6 more since and the results just haven’t been the same. My hair is fairly short now so less need of them though.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 26/08/2019 12:01

It's not a straightening treatment, it's a de-frizzing treatment. I love it because even though I still have to straighten my hair, it takes half the time to dry and straighten it than it usually would. I suppose it depends on how long you'd usually spend as to whether or not its worth it. I have masses of thick and frizzy hair, so for me it's worth it.

Would you try the home treatment? At least that way you're not paying salon prices? Once I'd had it done in a salon a few times I started buying the kit off Amazon and doing it myself. It's a faff, takes ages and is utterly exhausting! but the result is the same and I save myself a fortune Smile

ZaraW · 26/08/2019 14:55

My BB definitely straightened my hair for the first three months.

Florabritannica · 26/08/2019 23:00

I have very thick frizzy hair which I just can’t blow dry smooth myself. I’ve had Brazilian blow dries in two different hairdressers now. The first one cost an arm and a leg and was definitely an improvement but not life-changing. The second was a lot cheaper and absolutely transforming. My hair still has a bit of wave but I can now dry it smooth just by absent-mindedly wafting a hairdryer in its general direction. And I can brush it without it turning into a frizzball.
So I guess the moral is to be prepared to shop around. Not all Brazilian blow dries are created equal.

browzingss · 27/08/2019 01:27

I have fine hair and hated the results of my keratin smoothing treatment, my hair was constantly limp/flat/weighed down and essentially looked greasy when freshly washed. Dry shampoo would marginally help - I couldn’t get it clean enough for my liking with sulphate free shampoo. Waste of £150!

AgathaF · 27/08/2019 07:41

I use the Amazon one. It doesn't straighten hair but my hair is much less frizzy, doesn't frizz in the damp weather and is generally more manageable.

HasThisSoddingNameGoneToo · 27/08/2019 08:02

Please could someone post a link to the Amazon one, that they’ve used and would recommend?

Davespecifico · 27/08/2019 11:13

Yes, Amazon link would be great thanks.

Following with interest! This summer has been frizz central with the heat and rain, so gave up on the ghds and did wash/serum/scrunch, and twisted up longer top front layers. Had a BB about 2.5 years ago and yes it was good, but not affordable long term.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 27/08/2019 22:07

this is the one I've used

Like I said it's a slog to do it yourself (easy, but takes an age) but if you take your time and straighten really small sections at a time the results are excellent

AgathaF · 28/08/2019 07:19

I use this one now. Used to use the keratin kits one but it was discontinued for a while.
