How long do you clothes last?

Is it just me or are things just falling apart these days? I have cotton tops bought from Boden last year which already look misshapen and old, surely I can expect them to last longer than that. I try are buy the best I can afford but they’re just not made like they used to be, is it just me?

It's not just you. My mum and I both like Boden, White Stuff and Seasalt and we've noticed the fabrics are much thinner than they used to be. Her Seasalt tops keep getting little holes in them.

I don't know what the answer is though. Primark is mainly tat. Few good items in Sainsbury's recently. I'd rather not spend £30 on a top if it ends up in rags in a few washes. I do like nearly new ebay / charity shop clothes as if they fall to bits I've only spent a fiver at most. If you're lucky you can find older items in good condition from when the quality was better.

Yes I find clothing fabric is thinner these days. I did however find some sturdy cotton tops in the H and M and Crew Clothing sales this summer. Needless to say I bought several of each!

Joules has not impressed me recently. I only buy in the sales but shrinkage, twisted seams, meh. H&M are surprisingly good for basic t shirts.

If anyone finds some good quality plain cotton jumpers for autumnal layering, not oversized, please let me know!

@gotmychocolateimgood this is the H and M cotton top I bought. The fabric is thick, and they’re three quarter length sleeves so could be good for layering.

Hmm, I’m not great at linking! Search for ‘boat-necked top’ and you’ll find it.

Thank you!

Glad it’s not just me and my biological washing powder (god forbid) It’s a pain though. I’ll have a look at H&M again I’d kinda given up on them after some online shopping -arama!

Years. But I don't tumble dry or iron them.

nitgel · 23/08/2019 20:38

I buy tons at uniqlo. My cardis and trousers have lasted years

Oly4 · 23/08/2019 20:59

I like Boden, White Company, Jigsaw and god forbid M&S and I can make clothes from there last years with careful washing and no tumble drying

I'm wearing a t-shirt and skirt today that I bought in 2005. They were from an Australian shop. Maybe comparable to Monsoon?

Gannetseatfish · 24/08/2019 07:49

StCharlotte that is amazing! I probably have a few skirt from then but they haven’t been worn that much!

I have silk blouses that I wear regularly that I bought around 2010. My jeans tend to wear out. Good quality exercise wear, eg LuluLemon or SweatyBetty seems to last forever. I have some things from the 1990s that I wear occasionally. I expect to get a couple of years out of basics like t-shirts and throw them out when they get ratty.
