Be brutal - wardrobe clearing, help!

Just that. I'm exceptionally attached to things especially some old clothes. Today I've managed to clear a whole bumbag for charity shop, a large bag of things to ebay, and I've filled over half a wheelie bin.

All advice /support/words of encouragement appreciated 😣 😂

Dammit.

Binbag, bumbag is much less an achievement 😂

If the clothes are due to having some special significance you could cut a piece of each and make a cushion or collage (my sis did this). If they are not, take a photo and discard.

You need to ask why you cannot let go of these things, did you grow up in a house where you had too little? Did you have to fight for things? Did you always get hand me downs which you hated? Our deep rooted attachement, especially to clothes is often rooted in something else. Perhaps you have an ideal version of you and you want to keep the clothes for then?

Once you get to the point where you are really determined to let things go, put it all out on your bed (or bed and floor) and only keep the items you need (if you need wellington boots for example or you need waterproofs for cycling); clothes you wear and clothes you love wearing - do not keep clothes that you wear but you hate, the point of this is to end up with much fewer things that you love wearing, then you find yourself wearing things you love every day.

Donate or bin the rest of the items and do not look back - the stuff that needs to go to the bin should not have been in your wardrobe, the stuff you donate (remember only good clothes) can go to make someone else happy. The bin stuff can go to a clothing bank.

Then when all that is done, arrange your small pile of clothing neatly, in colour blocks or item blocks in your wardrobe - see Pinterest for ideas.

With everyday clothes, if you haven't worn it in 12 months, ditch it. Apparently.

IPokeBadgers · 22/08/2019 19:17

No helpful advice but bumbag gave me a much needed giggle on a stressful day so thank you! Grin

Dunno man I tried this, it's tough

I throw DH'S stuff away instead

Myshitisreal · 22/08/2019 22:03

I wouldn't do that on him because he wouldn't do it on me! It's tough but I feel like I've started. Might have ru review it all after again because I think I'm too lenient. My weight can go up and down so it's difficult knowing what to keep but I'm trying to keep what fits me right now

I try and do a clearout four times a year. I switch over my summer/winter stuff, and at the end of the season, I get rid of anything I didn’t wear. When I switch back, I review it, and anything I realise I no longer love goes before it goes back in the wardrobe.

I’ve tried to shop more mindfully over the last year, so have more expensive things I absolutely love. I have found that much harder over spring and summer - a quick hit from buying a Zara t-shirt rather than a grey cashmere jumper type thing!

I’ve signed up for a no-shop-September thing with Oxfam to go cold turkey on impulse buys. I did 40 days of buying nothing over Lent, and it worked really well, but I have definitely fallen off the wagon.

DukeOfEarlGrey · 23/08/2019 21:06

Definitely chuck out any bum bags Grin

0lga · 23/08/2019 21:08

Bum bags are back in, I’ll have you know Grin.

I recently donated a really nice jacket and have been hunting high and low for it because I wanted to wear it again and couldn’t believe I had sent to the charity shop. Beware!

rosedream · 24/08/2019 07:28

When you're at a weight you can realistically stay at get rid of all the larger and smaller sized clothes. This will do two things. Clear your wardrobe but also when keeping smaller or larger clothes you're saying to yourself that you are not happy with your weight and you have no confidence in yourself that the weight loss is permanent. How it helps me is that if the waste band starts to get tight I know I need to cut back for a week. It's really helped me maintain.

So now get rid of larger clothes and smaller ones that you know are not realistic. It's quite cathartic.

Think that sentimental have given you happiness and could then give someone else happiness if you give them away.

Go for it 😊

Almahart · 24/08/2019 08:49

I think giving away smaller and larger clothes is a good tip

I am going to start a big clear out. One thing I find helpful is to think - if I were to emigrate tomorrow would I bother to pack up this T-shirt or whatever and ship it abroad.

Thinking like that has really really helped me stop impulse buys. I am going to try to apply it in my clear out. I will put duplicates in the attic as I have a terrible habit of buying more than one thing if I find what I think is the perfect top.

Myshitisreal · 24/08/2019 10:27

Bum bags ARE back in. I've just bought one for work 🤣

My weight fluctuations are largely to do with ongoing health issues so it's largely out of my control and will go up and down over the years depending on what health issues I'm going through at the time (fairly complex)

Loving all the tips and advice thank you

I got the bag to the charity shop and came out with no purchases . I still need to do a drawer and my wardrobe so will tackle that maybe Sunday or Monday or soon anyway.

I keep a bag under the stairs into which I put items I want to discard. When the time comes to get rid of the things I go through the bag to sort for charity but also to double check. I'm usually surprised at how little I noticed the items as missing. That helps.

Myshitisreal · 24/08/2019 11:41

I agree I think that's why I had to get it to the charity shop ASAP. Or if sight out of mind 😊
