Can touching your hair a lot cause breakage?

I am really puzzled by this.
I often experience a sort of broken, fuzzing, thinner look to the hair that frames my face. Like the sides of my face. The back is ok..

I had a jaw length bob cut in last march and the condition improved a lot, i rarely messed with it or tied it back. I blow dry it straight a few times a week.

This summer i began to put in a loose claw clip as the weather was so hot, and an occasional low knot/bun. Since then the issue has seemingly suddenly returned.

I dont handle my hair roughly or use elastics, just a gentle claw or light scrunchie. But my OH says i am constantly touching and messing with the sides of my hair when im talking or concentrating.
Could this be what is causing the issue? Or is it the tying back?

I’m a hairdresser and you’d probably have to be really messing around with it to cause breakage. To me (and obvs it’s a guess as I can’t actually see your hair) it looks like chemical damage from highlighting, causing weakness which could break when clipping or tying up your hair. This can be made worse if you hair is longer due to dryness. If you highlight or colour your hair I’d suggest a really good conditioner/mask or use a salon only conditioning treatment such as See if this helps

Thanks. Ive only recently had highlights for the first time ever, - 3 weeks ago - and this issue with my hair has been long term, so its an odd one.
Will definitely pop in, see about a mask, etc.

Aw that’s a bit odd then. Do you pull your hair or twist it round your fingers? Does it feel dry?

Musicforsnorks · 21/08/2019 18:32

Yes i do twist it quite a bit, am trying to become more conscious of it - i guess its kind of like nail biting. I d0nt notice im doing it half the time.

This tends to follow me around, so was happening prior to highlights but i do neglect to condition it quite a bit and need to get on to that

Do you wear glasses? I'd noticed that the hair around my face, the baby hairs, had gotten thicker and I realised that my hair was catching in the hinges on my glasses and snapping off! New glasses and they're growing out again. Maybe that's why?
