Skin is getting worse with my ‘good skin regime’

As I’ve hit my mid thirties I decided to start taking proper care of my skin.
I’ve always had reasonably good skin without putting much effort into it.
The past year I’ve started to cleanse, tone and moisturise but as I’ve increased my routine (I’ve read multiple reviews recommending to) my skin has got terrible! I’m getting spots on my chin, cheeks and forehead.

At present my night time routine is-

Pixi Double Cleanse
(Occasionally) Lush Lavender Toner Spray
The Ordinary Retinol 0.5 in squalor
Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair
Elizabeth Arden Good Night Sleep cream

Three weeks ago I had a treatment of BioHydroderm but I think it’s too late to be getting side effects from that?

Does anyone have any advice on whether I am over doing my routine or if my choices are bad?

Also consider the possibility that something has gone off. This happened to me once after my foundation went off (very hot weather in a new build).

Prevention and retinol are the only two things scientifically proven to improve skin quality. At your age, prevention is completely key - high SPF every single morning over your moisturiser.

You could still use the retinol at night after removing your makeup, but you don't need all the other stuff. Micellar water is great for improving breakouts and getting rid of makeup.

If you have oily/acne prone skin then it’s worth hunting for products that specifically state they are non comedogenic and won’t clog your pores. If I buy a moisturiser or spf with oil in then I breakout like mad

You definitely need to figure your skin type and use products that address your skin concern

Have you researched how retinol products work and how to introduce them gradually into your routine? When you start/step up retinol use it takes three months for skin to adapt and you will see a lot of flaking/peeling on your skin in that time as it starts to work. You also must wear a stand alone high spf every single day when retinol is a regular part of your routine.

To be fair I never got any redness or peeling with retinol. So not everyone does but it is wise to build up slowly. I don’t think it’s the retinol I think it’s the overload of creams afterwards..

Not everyone suits a complicated routine. I wash, apply nicanamide with zinc, put caffeine serum around my eyes. Job done.

I'm 48 and have good skin and look younger. I use 0.5 % Retin A every night, Factor 50 sunblock every day and Nivea if I fancy it. I dont think there is much evidence for anything else and 90 % is luck/genetics.
Can you cut right down just to retinol, see if you react to that ? If not introduce whatever else you want gradually.
Then you will know what's causing it.

I had the same problem two years ago when I decided to stop being lazy and look after myself more! Had the most awful break outs and so I stripped it all back to simple face wash and nivea moisturiser. Within a few weeks my skin desensitised and calmed down and the breakouts stopped. Fading the marks left took a little longer. Some people's skin can handle lots of products but others can't.
