Is there a 'grown-up' way to tie up straight hair?

I'm going out tomorrow night. My hair is a bit of a mess. It's very straight and just above bra strap length. I have a round face and sometimes I think tying it up in a basic ponytail looks schoolgirlish.
There's no shape to it at the moment so just straightening it doesn't help.
My budget is zero and my hairdressing skills are weak.
I have some hair elastics and hair grips/pins, hairspray and some very old mousse to work with.
Any ideas welcome.
Thanks

How about a low bun or ponytail?

RezCowgirl · 17/08/2019 20:16

What about pinning back with some Kirby grips, maybe with a bit of a twist?

fedup21 · 17/08/2019 20:16

I’d twist it round and then put it up in a large claw type thing.

Lots of ideas and tutorials on Pinterest! Good luck

FusionChefGeoff · 17/08/2019 20:21

Can you do plaits / french braids?? You can get quite creative with them.

Or YouTube has some great 10 minute tutorials

Chilledout11 · 17/08/2019 20:21

I use clip in hair extensions and tie it up high on my head.

Pinkkahori · 17/08/2019 20:29

Thanks everyone.
I found a style I like called a Gibson Tuck. I've seen a couple of tutorials on it and it looks doable.
It looks cool on the videos I've seen. Not sure if it only suits a vintage style though.

You sound similar to me. Try going the rolled up do (works really well with a pretty headband) it's really easy and looks very classy

Pinkkahori · 17/08/2019 20:43

Well, i tried the Gibson tuck. It was not a success. Firstly it is not anywhere as easy as the video made it look and secondly it makes me look like a school marm from Little House on the Prairie Grin.

I trod loads of updo tutorials before i went to a fancy do and completely failed. Even the really easy ones were impossible for me. I think they are harder if you've got thin hair as I do.

I've solved the problem now though, I've had it all cut off🤣

Musicforsnorks · 17/08/2019 20:47

I do the twist and claw clip thing, sometimes a low knot or bun.
For styles that are so ‘easy’ to do, they can be quite surprisingly elegant.

I think we get the impression that looking good has to be difficult somehow, but it isnt always the case😁

PancakeAndKeith · 17/08/2019 20:48

Hanging out here because I’m just the same.

Long very straight hair. Extremely fine and thin so everything looks a mess. I’ve got a big round face. It’s very hard.

Chochito · 17/08/2019 20:54

You can do a ponytail and then use a strand of hair to cover the band.

Chochito · 17/08/2019 20:55

Like this .

Chochito · 17/08/2019 20:56

Or use a beautiful hair clip to hold the ponytail, such as this one .

Pinkkahori · 17/08/2019 20:58

I guess this might be my first ever humble brag but i can't tie up my hair because it's too bloody shiny.

I have long fine hair and favour a French twist for 'hair up' days. It looks hard to do but is actually very easy (makeuphair24h.com/hair/how-to-french-twist-hair.html). I tend to use hair grips for an invisible/polished look but a claw grip is great for an every day look.

Poppins2016 · 17/08/2019 21:07

Just saw your last post. Try a touch of dry shampoo and a smidge of hairspray before you start styling. Then lots of hairspray afterwards!

Potplant · 17/08/2019 21:09

I found a style on Pinterest which was pretty easy and I have zero skills. You get an elastic headband and tuck your hair into all the way round.

like this

I found that back combing it first gave me height at the crown and curl my fringe to make it look a bit more interesting.

Potplant · 17/08/2019 21:12

Too shiny hair - don't wash it tomorrow and use loads of hairspray. Mine always looks better after I've slept on it for a couple of days.

Saltisford · 17/08/2019 21:37

Either put a deeper parting and then sweep it over one shoulder pinning it a bit in place at the nape of your neck OR have a bit up and a bit down by pinning half back - a bit of back combing may look good with this

browzingss · 17/08/2019 21:58

Centre part with low ponytail always looks classy

Heartofglass12345 · 17/08/2019 21:59

What about something like this

Is there a 'grown-up' way to tie up straight hair?
Heartofglass12345 · 17/08/2019 22:02

Sorry just realised you wanted it tied up lol, well you could do this and tie it up too, maybe have a few loose curly bits around the front Smile

Glower · 18/08/2019 00:21

I’ve got super thick hair and given up trying to do anything with it now! I just go for a low bun most of the time. Ponytail, twist my hair around and then keep the hairband open to wrap around once more. Having it low down makes my hair look a lot smoother and somehow makes my face shape look nicer than a mid/high pony does if that makes sense!
