But what do you actually wear if your tummy isn't flat?

My new summer resolution is to be body confident, and I am generally feeling okay, but my tummy is just a "thing" and clothes in high street shops just don't help! I'm interested in knowing what styles, outfits, or shops are helpful for those of us without a washboard stomach.

For what it's worth I'm tall, size 12, possibly 14 bum, and I am fine with my curves overall. But my tummy has been sticking out now for a couple of years (even though I exercise regularly) and I think it's just late 30's hormones tummy. (TTC so no babies to blame)!

I just never know what to wear / what styles suit me given I feel like everything in the high street shops looks bad without a flat tum. Dresses, trousers, jumpsuits, even jeans and a tucked in top all highlight my tum (I think).

I'm also currently looking for a dress for a night out for a younger friend's hen night and I have no idea what works. NB I am NOT very frumpy / wearing M&S or anything yet, I am still in the Topshop mindset if not their actual clothes.....

Any thoughts?

M&S do lots of non frumpy things!

Most of us have stomach fat. We wear jeans, Hush harems, cigarette trousers. Anything and everything.

Have you boobs?
Empire waistline?

Skater style dresses are your friend if you can pull them off! Also loose wide leg trousers or fitted leggings/jeans and a loose top. I always have a bit of a tummy whatever weight I am but I generally think I look good!

Wear a longer top that skims over your stomach. If you want to wear something tighter you can get underwear that gives you a firmer look.
I wouldn't worry about it too much though, a lot of women have rounded abs even if they're slim in other places.

Are you a proper apple shape or something else with just a tum?

I find Topshop high waisted skinny jeans good for some hold, without being restrictive. Avoid anything hipster or low sling as it cuts you at your most unforgiving point.

Do you have anything you feel great in? What part of it makes you feel good? Identify that and replicate!

Try Sainsbury's! I'm 25 and love their clothes. Can be a bit hit and miss sometimes. I've had a emcs and have a sort of kangaroo pouch tummy but same body shape and size as yours. Have a look online x

I am early stage pregnancy where my stomach feels like a basketball

I’m finding topshop Joni jeans which are high cut are good, then a cami (topshop also has loads) and a blazer over the top.

Alternatively a-line dresses with a belt in are good, as are 50s style skirts with tops tucked in (they sit above the bump)

Loving all these tips!! Thank you! Smile

@NoBaggyPants who is the "we" you're referring to? Sounded a bit patronising.

Following on from comments- not sure about skater dress / empire line, reason being that as well as tummy I think my middle isn't too slim. So I think I'm basically a rectangle with middle part not going in too much, but I'm a curvy size 12 rectangle if that makes sense?!! I feel like empire lines only exacerbate the tummy and look like maternity dresses on me.... not sure if that makes sense!

I'm 6-8 inverted triangle with apple tendencies - would love to just tuck a shirt into jeans or trousers but I can't bear the side view!
I find skinny trousers with at least 5% elastane and a side zip good - then a drapey style body so there's no extra bulk being tucked in - the body must be a thong though to avoid vpl.
Also side wrap skirts are good in summer - the drape across the tummy area and the slit seems to detract attention away from tummy.
Peplum style tops also good - loads of wrap style blouse ones at topshop.
Wide ruffle shoulders also good to make saist tummy area look smaller.
Jeans, go as tight as you can to suck you in.
Shapewear but thin not thick - the thick ones add more bulk.

I do wear low waisted jeans sometimes - if you get the waistband just under the protruding part and then wear a peplum top over so it meets exactly where the jeans start with no ride up, it can be very flattering.
But I also wear high waisted jeans preferably with buttons very close together as zips tend to protrude outwards and add to the concave effect that we're trying to disguise.
