Root touch-up in between professional dye jobs

HobbyIsCodeForDogging · 16/08/2019 18:33

I get my dark hair coloured to match my natural colour to cover the greys that are starting to come in. Normally the stylist puts the colour on the roots then combs it through to the ends for the last 10 mins or so.

It seems to need done more and more frequently - more often than it needs cut - and I'm wondering if it would muck things up if I used one of the root touch up products that are available?

Anyone got any advice or recommendations?

Have you tried the L'Oreal spray-on root touch up? It's not a dye, washes out, but I find it great for eking out another 1-2 weeks between professional dyeing. I mainly do my temples and parting. Just takes a few seconds on my way out each morning.

Campervan69 · 16/08/2019 18:43

I've just done my roots myself although have highlights normally and I'm really pleased with the way it's turned out. Saved myself £100 which I then spent on boots recommended in another thread on here.....

HobbyIsCodeForDogging · 16/08/2019 19:10

@lifesnotaspectatorsport haven't tried that product, I'll give it a go, as it's wash-out it won't do any harm (although hopefully won't run onto my face when I'm exercising after work haha!)

@Campervan69 what did you use? Extra money for boots is a good thing!

I second the l’oreal Spray on. Just go a lot lighter than you think you need. My hair is mid brown and I use dark blonde.

Cohle · 16/08/2019 19:25

I've used the clairol nice'n'easy root touch up. It's basically a home dye kit but just with a small amount of dye that you apply with a brush to the root area.

It didn't have quite the grey coverage I was hoping for but I only left it for (the recommended) 10 minutes so possibly if I'd left it longer it would have worked better. I like the idea at least.

HobbyIsCodeForDogging · 16/08/2019 19:39

@Cohle handy tip thank you!

@Ulverstonian I think that might be the one that I've bought (and then left in a drawer because I'm worried about messing up the pro job) 😬

I tagged you the wrong way round but hopefully you get the idea!

I use a cream colour touch up, Something Wood, and a baby toothbrush to apply it.

WrongKindOfFace · 16/08/2019 19:44

If you know which dye they use at the hairdresser you can just buy a tube of that plus peroxide and use that to touch up your colour.

DearDeirdre · 16/08/2019 19:47

I ordered the same stuff as the hairdresser online ( Inoa for a professional supplier) and I do it it halfway in-between appointments. I got a slightly less potent peroxide thingy to mix it with, so I can do less damage, but it still really makes a difference. I have appointments every 6 or 7 weeks and touch up in between.

DearDeirdre · 16/08/2019 19:47

Cross posted with Wrongkindofface!

browzingss · 16/08/2019 20:41

Wait, can you clarify what you get done? Do you get your regrowth tinted darker or lighter?

Awks · 16/08/2019 20:47

Just done mine tonight. I bought a bowl and brush kit thing from Poundland years ago and use the cheapie Schwarzkopf two quid boxes for my roots every three weeks. I go for the full do at the salon every 8 weeks but this keeps the greys at bay and only takes half an hour

Betty777 · 16/08/2019 20:58

My hair is getting fairly grey but I only pay to have my ombre/highlights done at the salon, as sorting the roots out is so easy to do myself.

I use Clairol Root Touch up every 4-6 weeks. Takes an extra 20 ish mins before you wash your hair. £4.50 from Boots. (NB I also use to use this in a lighter shade to do my own highlights of sorts. it worked well!)

And I also use Josh Wood temporary brush on pen for emergency grey hairs spotted in the morning - not quite an exact match to my light brown colour but def worth a try. £15

The L'Oreal spray is great. I was worried it would look really obvious, but it doesn't - it blends in really well with the other colours in my hair - helps me extend my colour sessions from 6-8 weeks easily!

HobbyIsCodeForDogging · 16/08/2019 21:07

Hairdresser tries to get as close as possible to my natural colour, reality is the roots look a little darker brown than the rest but interspersed with grey. I've had some previous home hair dye disasters many, many years ago hence my ineptitude and nervousness! 😬

Another fan of the loreal colour spray. Definitely try that first. It gets me an extra 2-3 weeks before I have to get the pro dye job. If you dye with another product you risk getting stripy hair as it may not be an exact match for the salon colour so you end up with a ring of colour n your hair that doesn't exactly match the rest of it, if you're gonna do a touch up get the proper stuff.

mommybear1 · 16/08/2019 21:18

@WrongKindOfFace @DearDeirdre @HobbyIsCodeForDogging - I agree with the above posters I have really dark brown hair and white roots I buy Wells Kolestan 55/0 and the peroxide which is the same as my hairdresser uses - I got to the point my roots needed doing every 2 weeks. I can't afford to go that often and frankly don't have the time so I do mine at home after my PFB was born I did a whole year of root "maintenance" 😂.

Cynderella · 16/08/2019 22:56

I've dyed my hair at home for years but recently started highlights at hairdresser. Mostly light brown with dark blonde highlights. I'm trying to have it done every 2-3 months. Every few weeks, I mix half a bottle of developer with some dark blonde dye and brush here and there on parting and hairline.

Wouldn't work on a flat colour but works on highlighted and the roots are less obvious.

Elieza · 16/08/2019 23:23

I use whatever spray root touch up I can afford or is on sale. Even the pound shop and B&M has them these days. The best one was in a purple spray bottle in sainsbury for £4.50 in their sale. Dunno price now but they still have it. Fab stuff. Once you find the right colour on these products they are fab. Wash out. I’ve tried hair mascara and chalks too but they weren’t as good.

GastonTheLazybird · 16/08/2019 23:33

Another note for clairol root touch up. I tried the spray and it looks great but it doesn’t dry! I wear my glasses on my head and they get covered in it! I had streaks down my face for ages before I noticed Blush

GastonTheLazybird · 16/08/2019 23:34

Vote, not note!

browzingss · 17/08/2019 21:51

If you’re trying to tint your regrowth hair lighter, I’d probably leave it to the salon in case it gets a bit warm/brassy

pookypup · 18/08/2019 06:26

About 2 years ago I switched to visiting hairdressers every 5/6 weeks, but only having cuts on alternate visits. Mine charges 30 quid for roots so not bumping the overall cost up too much. I suppose you’d need a style which doesn’t need regular trims though!
