Just started wearing nail varnish for first time in about 20 years and my nails have now become brittle and have started flaking. Also staining from the varnish. What am I doing wrong? How can I prevent it? Any help would be really appreciated as before nail varnish my nails looked healthy and now they look awful. Thank you.

To help prevent staining , always use a base coat. A peel off base coat (unt make a good one) will mean no acetone or nail polish remover is needed and will help prevent dryness.

If you don't like the peel off option ( I don't and use cuccio base coat instead) then make sure you add moisture after you've used acetone. A nail oil pen (opi make a lovely orange scented one) is a good option as you can sling it on your bag and use it throughout the day. Apply it around your cuticle and on the underside of your nail.

Just to add , some polishes just do stain and there's little you can do about it.

I really recommend Simon & Tom Nail Saviour. If you use it every day you will see a huge difference in nail strength

Thank you I will add it to my list.

I always use two coats of base coat - either Seche Vite, or Barry M's matte top coat (as I find it helps the nail varnish stay put.)

The second coat I paint the top and underside of the nail, if that makes sense. Again, I find this helps to seal it and keep dark colours from staining.

If you’ve got genetically weak nails there’s not much you can buy over the counter, ibx is amazing but professional application only.

Try a nail oil, it fills up the oil channels in the nail plate which improves flexibility. Sometimes I smack my hand into a door by accident & look down expecting to see a break but the nails intact.

Cnd solar or dadi are both excellent. They stop the skin around the nail peeling or splitting if you extend the application a bit.
