The great underwire conspiracy

Title is a bit hyperbolic Wink

I’ve always thought I needed an underwired bra - I don’t have the perkiest boobs and they’re not small (C/D depending on back size/brand). Today I was looking for something new and tried on a wireless bra just out of interest.

Omg! It was a revelation! So much more comfortable and yet my tits barely look any different - slightly more pointy perhaps? But I actually quite like that!

Am I missing something here?? I keep looking in the mirror expecting to see my boobs round my ankles Grin I thought underwire was supposed to be better somehow?! Anyone else experienced a similar epiphany?

DH thinks it looks much better too so it’s not just me...

What size are you?

KipperTheFrog · 11/08/2019 22:01

I find non underwire bras give me a mono boob look, so no, I will stick with underwire!

TheFlis12345 · 11/08/2019 22:03

C is actually pretty small these days. I am a double 32GG and wiring is essential for them to stay in place and look good.

BedraggledBlitz · 11/08/2019 22:32

I'm 32DD and went wireless when breastfeeding. I tried going back to wired but it was so uncomfortable.

I find I have to tighten the straps more often to hoick them up but I can live with that if it means not having a red welt under my boobs every day.

isabellerossignol · 11/08/2019 23:11

If I only wore a small size I wouldn't hesitate to wear a bra without wires. But I'm about a 32GG and non wired bras are agony after a few hours. They don't have the support of wired bras so they drag on my shoulders and give me neck and shoulder pain.

It would be an absolute dream to be able to wear pretty non wired bras.

Auldspinster · 11/08/2019 23:57

I've worn non wired bras for the past 20 years. Something like a cross your heart bra will lift and separate and avoid the monoboob.

FartnissEverbeans · 11/08/2019 23:57

I wear a 36C or a 34D usually.

I went to Bravissimo at one point and they said I was something like a 32G (can’t remember exactly). The bra they gave me looked great but I could barely breathe in it.

I’m 35 and have always worn wired bras. Can’t believe how nice this one feels.

I prefer non wired bras, have worn them for many years now. I'm a C cup.

KatharinaRosalie · 12/08/2019 08:22

If you're 32GG but wear 36C then that would explain why you find underwires uncomfortable and see no difference. I wear non-wired bras sometimes as well, but there's no question that underwires give more support and better shape and separation.

SteelRiver · 12/08/2019 08:52

I find non-wired bras don't work like that on my FF boobs, unfortunately. I'd love be a tiny C!

I can appreciate why you don't like wires, though. I have had an open sore spot under my boob, caused by wires, for months.i wear crop tops round the house and I hardly ever go out, but it still wont heal!

timeforakinderworld · 12/08/2019 09:01

I switched to non-wired in pregnancy 9 years ago and couldn't face going back! Am 32C though.

wonderpants · 12/08/2019 09:07

I wear non-wired Doreen 34J bras.
They give me a much neater shape. I hate wearing underwired bras now- but sometimes have to as the Doreen comes up too high.

viccat · 12/08/2019 09:23

I'd love to wear non-wired bras but as a 32G, have not found any that look ok and feel supportive. I tried on some but they gave me a really strange shape unfortunately.

CadburySpira · 12/08/2019 09:37

I have recently come to the same realisation as you OP, but I am only a 32DD. It’s a bralette that I’ve bought and it gives a great shape, you wouldn’t know any different. I’m going to buy more and maybe transition over completely from wired.

I always thought they wouldn’t give enough support, but I’ve worn wired bras all my life and my bust has dropped considerably so I’m not sure they’ve made that much difference.

Snog · 12/08/2019 10:26

I now only wear unwired bras and I am a 36DD. The shape isn't as good but so much more comfortable.

BigFatBloomers · 12/08/2019 10:49

I haven’t tried them but I have seen people say great things about Molke bras. They’re not cheap and the designs are not for everyone but worth a look
molke.co.uk/
I’ve just started wearing Sainsbury’s crop tops at home and they are so comfortable! I discovered them when shopping for dd.
It might be worth getting properly measured again sometime though, even for a non-wired bra. If you found a 32G too right then it would be worth trying a 34F (up a band size, down a cup size)

Pepperwand · 12/08/2019 10:56

I've worn crop top style bras for the past 5 years or so and am not small chested. I suppose a wired bra would give a better shape but I was so sick of having red marks on my ribcage and feeling uncomfortable all day that I am happy with the change. They are just so much more comfortable, I'm not sure I could go back!

Branleuse · 12/08/2019 11:30

I like both for different times or different outfits. I find non wired give better cleavage as there is no wire to seperate them, they end up gravitating in the middle. Under some tops this looks great, and under others, it looks like monoboob.
Some non wired feel like im wearing an elastic band under my boobs as no boning to keep the band thick and strong.
I do love my molkes most of all, but tbh, best support and shape come from certain underwired bras, but they're not all created equal

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/08/2019 11:43

I've never owned a wired bra that hasn't dug into my rib cage, I love non wired ones.

matahairyy · 12/08/2019 11:48

Like a moulded one?
