If you're a size 14/16 and hourglass shape.....what do you wear?

I know v necklines and wrap dresses suit me, but I'm totally in a style rut. I have two young DC so want comfortable clothes that are easy to chuck on. I live in leggings, vests and cardigans but don't think they do anything for me. I like the Parisian style, classic and simple but worry I'm too fat for it! I don't want to look frumpy any more..... help!

Dresses, mostly. I find casual really difficult, and trousers more so. Hourglass is awkward to dress, I do envy tall straight people who can do jeans well!

Sigh81 · 10/08/2019 09:53

I am a different size but an hourglass: think principles are the same.

I also found casual difficult until I realised that I could just copy the shapes for work wear (pencil skirts, silk blouses, nipped in jackets, polonecks) but in different fabrics. So today I am wearing a high waist midi denim pencil skirt, a cotton shirt knotted at the waist and brogues. In winter, I will wear a poloneck tucked into a wool/boucle/tweed pencil midi skirt with knee high flat boots.

Not leggings
I usually wear chinos, jeans or trousers in a slim but not tight shape with smart T-shirt’s or shirts the same. I find generally fitted but not tight works best.

moonpiggle · 10/08/2019 10:23

Same im a 14/16 5ft8 and hourglass and I love midi dresses, cullottes with fitted tops, skinny jeans, blazers with fitted bottoms. Never wear leggings I think they look awful. Oversized cardigans too..i love.

moonpiggle · 10/08/2019 10:24

Wrap dresses are so flattering!

Mitsouko67 · 10/08/2019 10:30

Similar and I live in dresses for work and weekend.Dresses are fun and easy!

Pepperwand · 10/08/2019 14:36

I think I need to throw out my leggings, I always go to them because they are easy and comfortable...I can just throw them on with a long jumper but I think they make me look like a sack of potatoes Blush

I have just discovered jumpsuits. Try one. Honestly. I have huge boobs and a fat tummy and am short and they can be very flattering.

moonpiggle · 10/08/2019 15:31

Yes i agree..ditch the leggings! Not a good look.

Thegracefuloctopus · 10/08/2019 15:42

This is me all over. I live in leggings and hate it. Love a big cardi or jumper. Love a button down skirt, a wrap dress for work. My confidence is growing as I care less and less about what people think. Which has happened since having DS who is now 10months. I find it a lot easier to dress in winter though, hate summer for clothes. Skimpy just isn't a good look when the himalayas are bursting out of the top!

Sickoffamilydrama · 10/08/2019 15:55

I'm a 16, 5ft8 and hour glass trying to shift my post baby tummy especially as DS is 3 but as third child I'm struggling, anyway what suits is jumpsuits, skinny/slim trousers and a loser top but with a waist so peplum not a swing.
Some wide leg trousers but they usually need to be high waisted.
I've got long slim legs so can do shorter skirts, dresses or skirts but usually balance this out by them not being tight or with a loser top. If it's a loser bottom so a full skirt or trousers then I'll go for a tight top and tuck in although the post baby stomach this doesn't work as well as it used to.

Agree casual can be more difficult.

Fit and flare is a good look as can be shirt dresses anything that emphasizes your waist.

Supersimpkin · 10/08/2019 18:40

Dresses.

Fastest dressing ever, comfortable and you automatically look smartish, if not polished.

In summer I put on midi wrap or oversized dress with white trainers, takes 2 min to front door.

TheRLodger · 10/08/2019 18:43

This is me. Every day it’s jeans and T-shirt. Lots of dresses in the summer. The one I hate is smart casual where if you dress up a dress it’s too smart but jeans don’t cut it. Non denim trousers I find really hard to fit

Ok I'm surprised about all the wrap dress fans... like, what about your boobs?!
I'm an hourglass too but every wrap dress I've ever tried has given me rather more cleavage than I'm willing to show. They're literally not cut with boobs in mind. It's fine in autumn/winter when you can wear a cami underneath but in the warmer months, I don't want extra layers!
I do agree with dresses in general though, but I prefer round neck ones that nip in at the waist and then are a bit floaty cover my fat thighs

Alanis41 · 12/08/2019 19:58

Topshop Jamie jeans and a nice floaty cami top, or Boden blouse with boucle jackets or duster coats. Summer dresses with floaty bottom but fitted tops, with leather jacket or denim jackets. I tend to try and draw attention upwards and wear a lot of brighter colours. I hate my belly but till I lose the weight, need to just dress flatteringly! I never wear leggings outside now as read on one of these threads that they were only for sporty sorts and not the fashionable peeps!

CremeDeSudo · 12/08/2019 21:03

5,7, pear shaped and 12/14 on top and 14/16 on bottom.

I find it hard to do smart! And I don't like wrap dresses due to the cleavage issue!

I've found things easier since embracing my shape (and investing in a shit load of shapewear). Usually I'm in jeans and a t shirt partially tucked in. But I'm also a fan of midi skirts, high waisted things and generally anything that draws attention to my waist. Tmw I'm planning on wearing high waisted mom jeans with a band t tucked in all the way.

CremeDeSudo · 13/08/2019 07:59

If anyone finds a floaty/pleated midi skirt that doesn't make them look wider I'd like to hear about it! Love them but can't seem to find one that suits!

Hoppinggreen · 13/08/2019 10:21

I ordered a pleated midi skirt online a while ago to wear with trainers (seen a lot of photos of that look)
I looked like a square nun

moonpiggle · 13/08/2019 11:00

😂 not just me then in a pleated midi skirt! Although I have found that the higher up my waist I wear it, I look less wide! Its black with elasticated waist so that helps.

wellhonestly · 13/08/2019 12:51

Pretty much v-necks, and things that emphasise my waist. Cardis tend to fit that description.

Skirts and dresses tend to be knee-length and to flare out a bit from the waist. this kind of shape though prob not this print, lol - very annoyed at the prevalence of straight midi skirts in the shops at the moment. And I usually get my dresses from bravissimo as they are the right shape.

All trousers seem to need taking in at the waist, grrr. Wide leg trousers always look wrong on me, make me look too cuboidal...

And lastly, my bust is quite, erm, imposing so I usually wear dark coloured tops and lighter or patterned skirts. HTH OP
