What's the low down on Hobbs?

Had a look at their website and LOVE some of the stuff! I have a few questions:

  1. Do they regularly have sales on? If you buy from the sales, is it normally the odd fitting/crap stuff left? They have a sale on and, surprisingly, there's lots of stuff I love and in my size...makes me suspicious.

  2. what is their online service like? I don't have a store near me.

  3. are they true to size? I am a 14-16 and imagine in an expensive brand like that, a lot of t will be too small for me? Some of the stuff looks so flattering for a curvy girl though!

  4. What is the quality like?

  5. Is the cut of the workwear good? I prefer the blouses and trousers so it looks a great place for workwear.

Thank you!!

Hobbs is brilliant quality, my stuff from there lasts ages. I find it true to size, definitely not on the generous side if you’re between sizes. I find online fine and their sales are good though I tend to buy full price to ensure I get what I want.

FizzBuzzBangWoof · 04/08/2019 07:38

Personally I wouldn't ever buy full price but I have a few nice things which I've bought in sales and have been really happy with

There always seems to be lots of nice things in the sales

legalseagull · 04/08/2019 07:41

I love Hobbs. I wore a stunning dress from there to a wedding recently which I bought in their most recent sale a few weeks back. The only issue I have is that their clothes are not made for tall women. I can't buy anything from them with arms as they are literally inches too short. It's not like I'm a giant or anything. I'm 5'9

JoJoSM2 · 04/08/2019 07:41

They’re good for workwear. And a sale is a sale with a lot of stuff available.

MidnightAtTheOasis · 04/08/2019 07:42

I’ve got loads of stuff from Hobbs sales (and charity shops). All really good quality basics. Sizing is smaller than M&S but not tiny - try size 16.

LifeOfBox · 04/08/2019 07:47

I love Hobbs - all my work clothes come from there. Generally very good quality. Mainly true to size imo. But yes to size up if you are in between sizes.

Some of the tailored dresses are machine washable which is always a big plus.

Sales come and go, get on the mailing list. I probably buy 5 or 6 dresses a year. Only ever buy full price if I have a formal work event and love something enough.

ToManderleyAgain · 04/08/2019 10:41

Agree with PP that their sizes do not suit tall frames. I am above average height but also have a long torso and find that the waist always sits far too high on dresses, jackets, etc

domesticslattern · 04/08/2019 10:45

Good quality but yes, made for short people. Tops always way too short on me.

If you join their mailing list (and possibly if you buy a certain amount of stuff, I'm not sure), then you get absolutely spammed with daily emails BUT you also get a £20 voucher on your birthday. Smile

SeagullAteMyChihuahua · 04/08/2019 10:49

Also not made for big breasts. I'm a size 8 in their skirts and should be for dresses but they rarely fit my chest!

Their workwear stuff is great - long lasting and smart (and washes well)

TSSDNCOP · 04/08/2019 11:16

I buy in their 20% off. IIRC there’s one around September pay day and then Black Friday. Sizing is generous (which in my case is good) but sleeves and legs come short (I’m 5’9) so I’d never buy a coat or trousers.

There are some real gems, but also some very fast-aging stuff, where you go in the fitting room aged 40 and come out as your mum. See also MV and Phase 8.

  1. Sales are good, nearly everything is reduced, good range of sizes. Although if you have your heart set on something in a particular size don’t think it will definitely be safe to hold out for the sale.
  1. Online is good. Stuff comes quickly, in nice but not over done packaging ( wrapped in tissue, in a slim cardboard box, inside a minimal branded bag for waterproofing). Returns are easy.
  1. Sizing is fairly true to size. They don’t skimp on cut and they don’t particularly vanity size either. I am 5’4” and I love the fact that it doesn’t drown me and the waist isn’t past my hips. I do need to take up trousers or wear heels. I would also say it’s cut so it will suit a range of body shapes (pear, hour glass, inverted triangle) unlike some brands which heavily favour one shape over another.
  1. Quality is excellent. Good fabrics, well made, nice finishing. Shoes are particularly good quality. They have their own factory in Italy. Styles are fairly classic and actually made by craftsmen who have some idea how to accommodate the human foot.
  1. Cut of everything is pretty good. Hobbs understands elegance. It is all fairly classic and built to last, so not fashion forward. It would look a little staid in the creative industries perhaps, but brilliant for just about everywhere else. In terms of both style and durability, you’d get a few years out of things.
bodgersmash · 04/08/2019 11:58

I love Hobbs. I do find their sizing fairly generous.

The clothes last and wash very well, I also like the fact that a lot of their plain tops are double layered at the front so you can't see detail of bra underneath.

One thing I'll mention is that their clothes DO NOT like to be tumbled dried. That's the only time they start to break down or become bobbly.

CottonSock · 04/08/2019 12:00

That's why Iike it, I'm 5 feet tall.. Have only got tops and from outlet store. Wash and wear well

DistantDream · 04/08/2019 15:02

Thanks all! I'm 5ft5 so should be fine! Will def try some bits from the sale!

I'm a 14, but recently bought a 12 dress there.

LifeOfBox · 04/08/2019 17:34

Check the lengths on the website OP. I’m 5’7 and have to be careful not to buy anything less than 93/95cms in length dress wise unless it is winter when I can wear opaque tights.

LifeOfBox · 04/08/2019 17:35

Of course if you are not 50 and don’t mind showing a fair bit of leg you might not mind as much as I do!😂

TrumpInflatableChased · 04/08/2019 17:37

I don’t find it brilliant if you’ve got a chest. Saying that it’s good quality and well made.

CherryPavlova · 04/08/2019 17:37

Very good workwear. Hard wearing, comfortable, well cut. Perfect length for me usually.

jcurve · 04/08/2019 20:07

Generally good quality and very long wearing. I know polyester is public enemy #1 right now, but they use excellent polyester that lasts well.

As someone else said, it’s not cutting edge but you’ll wear stuff for many seasons. If you like block colours, they do lots of brights. I am 5’9” but relatively short from hips to shoulders, so generally their clothes fit me well at the waist. I just get the hemline lowered.

NotMeNoNo · 07/08/2019 19:16

I love Hobbs but mostly get knitwear and stretch garments, their standard fit doesn't fit me well in the bust/shoulders. Generally really well made and lovely fabrics.

FantailsFly · 07/08/2019 19:23

If you can get to a store I recommend. Their staff will suggest items you might never have looked at so you get introduced to new looks and ways of putting outfits together. I find their sizing generous btw. Oh and they sometimes have fab shoes.

Lumene · 08/08/2019 21:08

I’m 6ft with Bravissimo sized curves and find their skirts and jackets made from lighter fabrics great. Trousers would not fit me in a million years unless I drank the ‘shrink me’ potion from Alice Through the Looking Glass.
