My skins really rough at the moment and clogged can anyone recommend a decent facial exfoliater. I don't mind spending a bit more.

Best one I’ve ever tried, and I’ve tried some really expensive ones, you need to remember sunscreen everyday though

Origins "never a dull moment" is excellent and it lasts a long time.

Biologique Recherche P50, or one of the variants. No abrasion. Fantastic exfoliation. (Slightly funky smell.)

Marilynmansonsthermos · 02/08/2019 21:52

Yves at Laurent 'Top secret' natural action exfoliator. It's brilliant and grain free

The best exfoliator I have ever used (and I've been using it for 20 odd years) is a teaspoon of ground almonds mixed with a teaspoon of milk. As you use it, the almonds release a little bit of oil so your skin doesn't dry. You need the very fine ground almonds from the baking section of any supermarket, the sort you buy in health food shops is not fine enough.

NormHonal · 02/08/2019 22:15

I’ve also tried lots of pricey ones and always come back to St Ives Invigorating Scrub.

cloud1183 · 02/08/2019 22:20

Chemical exfoliants are much better than physical ones, which are likely to damage the skin. For a cheap one, try The Ordinary glycolic 7% toning solution

It’s definately worth reading about the pro’s of chemical exfoliants over scrubs and physical exfoliants

Propertyofhood · 02/08/2019 22:25

I've got that Ordinary bright red face peel, and it's OK, but what I find works better is using the 7% glycolic acid toner a few times a week after cleansing.

Alpha-H Liquid Gold

CrazyDuchess · 03/08/2019 08:57

@cloud1183 can I use a chemical exfoliant on dry flaky skin?

Do you moisturise straight after using?

Thanks

JDSTER · 03/08/2019 09:08

crazy you can and should moisturise after exfoliating. Give it a minute so your skin is dry with no residue left, then moisturiser.

CrazyDuchess · 03/08/2019 09:22

@JDSTER excellent thank you!

OhTheShoes · 03/08/2019 09:45

Another vote for st ives - i always find exfoliation masks to be too gentle. I like it when they have a god amount of grit Grin

cloud1183 · 03/08/2019 09:49

CrazyDuchess- yes always moisturise after using an exfoliant. I always moisturise at night regardless of what products I use. I use Murad skin perfecting lotion which is non comedogenic and very light but extremely moisturising

I’d also not recommend using chemical exfoliants every night as your skin will fall off if you are not used to it. Do it x3 a week at first and you’ll find that will be all you need

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 03/08/2019 09:49

I read years ago that Demerara sugar mixed with either cleanser or moisturiser was good. I've never found a better one as it's lovely and gritty and cheap. I have a Clinique one that was free at bonus time. It's rubbish. Really fine grit that you can barely feel.

BelindasGleeTeam · 03/08/2019 09:52

Superdrug glycolic acid toner. £3. It's brilliant.

SinkGirl · 03/08/2019 09:55

I agree with the ordinary one listed above but do not leave it on long the first few times - it’s extremely powerful. Avoid undereye and cheekbones, I got burnt by it there. Now I can use it for the full 10 mins with no issues.

Propertyofhood · 03/08/2019 09:55

God I used to love my St Ives Scrub and I did find it made my skin quite soft, but looking back it was also quite red and it probably wasn't very good for it.

Having said that, using acid on your face probably isn't very good either and I'm sure in a few years time there will be something else and we will look back in horror that we used to chemically peel our faces! My DH is always horrified that I use acid on my face 😂

CrazyDuchess · 03/08/2019 10:01

Thank you @cloud1183

cloud1183 · 03/08/2019 10:41

Crazyduchess- I forgot to add that your face is likely to sting quite a bit until you are used to it. Scrubs will just strip your skin and irritate it while chemical exfoliants will work deeper

Writersblock2 · 03/08/2019 10:49

Paula’s Choice AHAs and BHAs. Manual exfoliant are mostly a waste.

CrazyDuchess · 03/08/2019 17:33

That's really helpful thank you!
