As travel bags go how would you rate this out of 10?

I’m not mad about the white stitching but the size and features it has seems to make it sound good for travel. Is the colour vile? I would go for black but the white stitching is even more noticeable. Can’t decide whether to order one or not. Is it terrible?

It’s hard to tell from the thumbnail pic I can see but as a general rule I say ‘if you don’t love it, don’t buy it’. You will just be settling for something that will do and probably end up buying something you like more later.

I know the Mia Tui bags are very popular on MN, but I'm afraid I've been very disappointed with those that I have bought. Initially I've always thought they were a great idea, and have been swayed by good offers, but have always ending up putting them in the charity shop. I've had a couple, and they've both had a horrible plastic-y smell when you first get them out of the packaging (and it didn't go off on one of them). The white stitching is not great, and for me they weren't as good organisationally as I thought. I much prefer Kipling or Longchamp for travel.

On another S&B threads about backpacks someone recommended Roka bags which look lovely and good quality. I have the small version of this in my basket. The larger version might be what you're looking for.

On another thread someone linked to Travelon bags, they might fit the bill

HeyMonkey · 02/08/2019 10:00

See, I love all of the pockets and zips, the bottle holder and the pouch. I just think the bag is a big ugly and wish it came in a camel colour.

Are there any other bags with the same things, but nicer looking?

Luxesoap · 02/08/2019 10:04

Thanks all (name changed OP here). Right, I’m definitely not getting the Mia Tui one now. I’ve got a Kipling bag and really liked it but wanted something more dressy looking which is where I hoped the MT would come in. I will have a look at Travelon and Roka thanks. I think I have so many criteria for the perfect travel bag that I’d probably have to make the thing myself

I’d actually go to Cath Kidston for that, I think. Not normally my thing but I found a lovely hold-all there in a pretty pattern on a navy background some years ago and it’s been a great travel bag. I’ve had it for over six years and it still looks like new. I got the coated cotton fabric which is durable and cleans up very well.

Ninkaninus · 02/08/2019 11:35

And if you can’t find a bag that has as many pockets/compartments as you would like, you could always get a bag organiser instead.

TipseyTorvey · 02/08/2019 12:59

I use Mia tui for travelling with kids as they look better than the horrible decathlon £5 thing I was using to start with but still cheap enough that I don't cry if drinks pens or sweets spill in them. I have the mini jen in dark silver and the little ruck sack in the same colour. I keep my nice leather bags for when I'm travelling for work with no kids to destroy them.

Luxesoap · 02/08/2019 21:58

Ooh I never thought of a bag organiser. That would definitely increase my choice as I don’t want a big bag but with one vat-like pocket which you need to ferret around in to find anything.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/08/2019 22:08

I have a clutch purse/wristlet in rose-gold (for holidays), it's nice enough , cost me £10 . Slightly sheeny but it is a metallic .

I do like Kipling bags , I know they're ££ but they last well .
I don't wear leather by choice so these brands suit me (though I've noticed some of the higher end Kiplings are sneaking leather in Hmm , have to avoid them)

KatharinaRosalie · 02/08/2019 23:35

I bought one and as pp said, it stank so much I had to give it away, unusable.
Got a nice Samsonite one instead, have you checked them? Super quality, I use it as my everyday handbag as well and it's been through many airports, no signs of wear.

givememarmite · 03/08/2019 08:15

What about the Day Birger et Mikkelson Gweneth bag? There are different sizes and the largest one comes with separate pouches. It's not as structured as the mia tui bags but I prefer the style and colours.

I used this as my beach/travel bag this year, after my Accessorize bag finally gave up the ghost.

I love it. It has many pockets which I don't normally like, but it's waterproof and when I got it, I got three free clear bags with it.

I have multiple Mia Tui bags, including the one in that photo. It's lovely but not that big to use as a travel bag. I use it as my everyday handbag and used it for a long car journey home from holiday yesterday. It was fine for a small/medium water bottle, large purse, phone, slim makeup bag etc. If you want something you can shove a cardi or scarf in, iPads, kids stuff & random bits of shopping etc I would look at something larger. Depending on how much stuff you need to take they do at least another 4 bags which are similarly smart but bigger, and some of them have a section on the back which slips over a suitcase handle. I love the organised interiors and many of them come with small clutch bags. I find that the smell doesn't linger.

Thanks everyone. I’m off to check out the links you’ve kindly given.
