Is here any treatment for hormonal acne?

My skin is really starting to get me down but I can’t imagine there’s anything the doctor can prescribe.

I’m saying acne but it’s actually just one nasty spot after the other. I’m 39 and every month before my period is due I get a bit cyst type spot, usually on my chin that takes a week to come to a head and the go.

I’m then left with a red mark that last for months. My body just doesn’t seem as quick at healing as it used to. I’ve currently got 7 of these marks on my chin. Thank god for concealer!

Can anyone recommend anything please?

I’m currently using the neutrogena visibility clear range and avene cleananace sunscreen. I’ve tried benzoyl peroxide but it just burnt my skin.

Many thanks.

Cutting refined sugar in my diet right down (and cutting back on natural sugars) has really worked wonders for mine. My skin is better than it’s been in years and the monthly breakouts have stopped completely. It took a few weeks to lose my sweet tooth though!

I have found that only hormonal contraceptives help me-first the pill and then the Mirena.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/08/2019 08:59

The pill?

Zyneryt helps for big angry sport. You need a prescription though.

Thankyou, I’ll try and cut out sugar-I don’t eat much but definitely some!

I’ve never taken any hormonal contraceptives so it’s all new to me. I think a trip to the drs is probably in order.

I just don’t understand why I’m like this now, I’ve never suffered with my skin. I wonder if it’s a perimenopause thing.

Dianette is really good for hormonal acne

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/08/2019 09:21

I had a few months like that, zyneryt sorted it out for and then it all went away.

The delights of peri I presume.

I used to get this like clockwork one or two huge spots just under my jaw and they switched side each time and were so painful.

I really changed up my skincare and it's made a huge difference. Salycilic and glycolic acids have made the biggest difference alongside a strict cleansing routine.

I still occasionally get them maybe every second or third month but they're most definitely smaller and less painful less noticeable and they don't leave the same horrible marks.

It may all be a coincidence however I've not changed anything else (diet is still the same, still terrible at drinking enough water and I don't and never have take any contraception)

Propertyofhood · 01/08/2019 09:53

Are you on hormonal contraception?

I found that they only think that stopped the spots round my chin and jaw were coming off hormonal contraception (Mirena coil was particularly bad for me). I didn't come off them for that reason, but now that I'm not taking anything my skin is so clear. But I found when I did have hormonal acne, absolutely no product really touched it.

Sorry, I feel like that all might be quite unhelpful! It seems everyone is different, so if you're not on any hormonal contraception that might actually help?

I second zineryt. I posted on here 4 weeks ago because my skin was so bad. 1st day of my period. It would take a month to heal but by then next month's were coming out. Spots, lumps, bumps, rashy, oily and so so sore. Been using zineryt since then and I don't have a single spot now. I Came on again today and still nothing. Really hoping it has broken the cycle. Dont get me wrong, its still a bit red and my scars are awful from the spots but i have never had skin this clear ever. You can buy it for about £20 if getting a docs appointment is difficult.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/08/2019 19:48

Ah, I knew I misspelt it.

Aqueo517 · 02/08/2019 08:23

Brilliant thankyou, I’ll try the zineryt before I go down the contraception route. God I hope it works! Did you find it caused any reaction in your skin? I seem so sensitive to everything.

Gojojogogogo · 02/08/2019 12:21

So far, no reaction. The only thing is my lips are so dry, think it works on the oil production and obv can't distinguish between oil you want and oil you don't. I put it on as soon as I open my eyes and as soon as I get in from work after I take my make up off so that I then have time to soak it all in and moisturise later on.

Terriergrrrrrrrr · 02/08/2019 18:40

The pill cleared it up for me but I had to stop it and the spots came back. Then I tried Paula's Choice BHA exfoliant in the turquoise blue bottle and it cleared up the spots. Brilliant stuff!

ashtrayheart · 02/08/2019 18:45

I'm 43 and have similar sounding skin. Duac is the first cream that consistently works and doesn't stop working, for me. I have to use it every day though or they come back.

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/08/2019 20:39

Acne shouldn’t scar like that, go to the gp and ask for help.

If it doesn’t work ask to be referred to dermatology.
