Any curly girls out there that. Oukd she'd some light?

I've been read g about it but it just seems so complicated I cant work out the basics? I have think wavy damages hair. My dds are mixed race and have dark coils but not afro texture. Anyone ble to simplify how it works?

  1. Wash with a regular shampoo nd conditioner.
  2. Don't wash with shampoo anymore just with a specific conditioner once a week?

Also it says don't brush. Is that ever again or just everyday? Mine and my daughters hir would be a matted mea surely?

TIA

From over the years of battling with my own hair.

Use a wide tooth comb or just use fingers to brush hair.

Just conditioner to wash hair with

Just conditioner to wash (think of it like cleansing your face with cream rather than soap) - it does work.

Whilst hair is covered in the conditioner is the only time you should run a comb (wide toothed) or fingers through it - any other time you will disturb the curl pattern and create frizz.

Make sure your conditioner is curly girl approved (ie no drying alcohols or silicon (plastic coating which eventually also dries out hair). Often really cheap conditioners are the best. use this website www.curlsbot.co.uk to check

Once "washed" with conditioner then condition with the same stuff. Add curly girl approved gel or moouse. - water based to doesn't coat hair/dry it out - curlsbot helps with that too.

It is worth following a instragrammer/facebook page - but keep it simple.

Coonditioner wash
Condition
Gel/Mousse

Sorry - website is www.curlsbot.com/

Before you start you need to clarify to remove product build up.
Use a shampoo with Sodium Laurel Sulphate to do this - most shampoos. Then a deep condition is good - use Curly bot to find one.
The thicker an courser you hair is the more it is more likely to need the heavier products - sometimes using these products will make you feel like you have product build up - if so clarify and deep condition again.

There are lots of rules and many are broken - people swear by Denman brushes. Always apply styling products on soaking wet hair, use a t-shirt to scrunch the excess moisture out of your hair. Allow you hair to dry without touching it - it forms crispy curls called casts, you wait till it's fully dry before you gently scrunch away the casts.

My go to products are

As I Am coconut cowash
Giovanni leave-in conditioner
Cantu curl activator
Flax seed gel

You can start with tesco extracts conditioners, curl jelly from boots (umberto someone or other) and Pantene number 5 mousse. Maui pink shampoo is good for washing if you still want to shampoo. I shampoo mine once a week, conditioner wash another time. Use a denman if you want, smooth out the crunch from your gel/mousse rather than scrunch if you want. Play around with it! It's not a one size fits all method, so don't get bogged down by the 'rules'. You can use gels and mousses together, one after the other. You can use regular conditioner as a leave in to stop your cast from getting too hard.

Have a look on Instagram. There's millions of curly girl accounts on there! So much more helpful than googling. But don't think you have to buy all the products they use.

cheesemumma · 29/07/2019 20:46

What do you do with it at night?

Pineapple it at the top of your head with a silk/satin scrunchie or one of those plastic hair bands that's like a spring. Primark sell them. Some people use a silk/satin bonnet or a multi purpose buff thing as extra protection but I find it too hot so just pineapple.

Thanks for the tips! I'm going to try it. Fingers crossed. Just watched some Instagram videos., they use so much product, scared its gonna be uber greasy.

There's a Facebook group for UK curly girls that's really useful. You can buy the CG book too.

I use a lot of cantu, umberto giannini curly and ultimate blends products on my 3b hair. Lots of curlies seem to co-wash but I prefer a bit of shampoo to cleanse, followed by a good conditioner and a hair food mask (banana smells amazing!) then plop with some curl activator. There a lot of trial and error finding what works for you though.

Sleeping in a silk scarf or on a silk pillowcase is a must- massive reduction in frizz!

Some Facebook groups are scary, you get banned for talking about a list of topics! There's an uncensored one - which is as normal as it gets.
