Would my hair benefit from the curly girl method?

My hair is very soft and Fluffy (and needs a cut!) lots of baby hair. It will never be straight and sleek (even when straightened the baby hairs don't behave.)

The underneath is very curly but on top is nearly straight. Confused

Is it worth trying the curly girl method? Does it really make a difference?

TIA

Would my hair benefit from the curly girl method?

The photo is of it still damp with no brushing or products on it. FYI

As it dries it will get big and Fluffy on the bottom and flat on top. It's a joy!

Only one way to find out!

I dont 100% subscribe to CG as its so time consuming and leaves me restricted to one look, but its all about gentle TLC so i reckon give it a go and give your hair a rest from stripping and styling every now and then at least?

hairhair · 29/07/2019 09:14

Your hair looks a bit like mine but mine is thicker and curly girl method does nothing for mine!

IrisJoy · 29/07/2019 10:37

I probably straighten my hair about once a week, and get it coloured once or twice a year. So it's not overly processed! Just the way my hair is, sadly! @OnlineAlienator I know I should just give it a go but I don't want to spend lots of money on different shampoos etc for them to be no good. Maybe I will just have to give it a go.

That's interesting @hairhair I feel its going to do nothing for mine either. I have yet to find something that does even after 40 years! Hmm

Oh god no dont spend loads of money - just try a co-wash and plopping it for a start!

Blueandredandblue · 29/07/2019 11:31

Yes it would. The hair on top is often straighter because it is the most exposed to the elements and hence damaged.

If you Google curly girl for wavy hair you can find curly girl light instructions. It's not as full on as curly girl.

My hair looks very similar to yours! About 6 months ago, I started using Organic Shop (Amazon) shampoo and conditioning the bottom "fluffy" half using Garnier Ultimate Blends coconut oil (it's shampoo but I find actual conditioner too heavy for my hair). Photos attached.

It has completely changed my hair for the better. None of the fluffiness, way fewer tangles, and I can now go 5+ days without washing, when I used to have to wash every single day!

It's a semi curly girl routine, really: I focussed on avoiding silicone and paraben products, letting it air dry, only brushing with fingers/wide toothed comb.

Spanneroo · 29/07/2019 12:51

Argh - photos won't attach, sorry!

My hairs like this. It doesn't respond to CG at all just looks greasy and scruffy. Actually I've found the opposite helps- shampooing very regularly and air drying but with very minimal conditioner IYSWIM
Also I get it cut so that the layers give it some more movement. The only time it looks properly tidy is when it's processed though- dyed and blow dried straight and/or straightened. I have a wave but can not get curls to stick no matter how hard I try. I've found plaits, or a chignon twist or other "updo" looks nice though.

Mostly I live in a pony tail or messy bun and find dry shampoo and/ or hairspray can help give it some volume. Sometimes a few of those underneath curls make it free and that always looks pretty and gives the illusion the rest of my hair is curly when it's really not.

gingersausage · 29/07/2019 15:16

I do “CG lite” as well. My hair hates co-washing so I use SLS free shampoo and not too much conditioner, then gel or curl creme squished into soaking wet hair, plopped in a t-shirt or microfibre towel and then air dried. If I absolutely have to be somewhere I diffuse with the dryer on cold.

I only use cheap products; Palmers shampoo, £ shop conditioner, Eco gel or Boots curl creme (a pot lasts a year).

You’ve nothing to lose by giving it a go. The important things are no SLS or silicones, no heat styling, no brushing (only finger comb when your hair has conditioner in) and no scrubbing at your hair with a towel.

That's great. Thank you everyone. Dobyiu know how long it will be until I see a difference? (if I am going to!) I don't want to be going around with dodgy hair for months, hopibg that CG will kick in! 😁

I saw a difference within 3-4 days, and by 2 weeks in, it was notably better. Good luck!

FenellaMaxwell · 29/07/2019 18:34

My hair is like yours. It just made it look dull and greasy!

SouthWestmom · 29/07/2019 19:54

I started CG lite recently and have seen a difference after three washes. Use shampoo once a week, micro fibre towel, conditioner left in other days, curl cream on wet hair, no touching, air dry. No sulphites etc.

tumtitum · 11/10/2019 21:38

I know this is an old thread and contradicts my previous post but I've been doing curly girl for about 6 weeks now and am seeing a definite improvement. I'm quite lazy so it's not high maintenance if you keep it simple. Not every day is a great hair day but I'm not tying it up all the time now! Tried to attach a pic but not sure if it's worked...

MariahDontCarey · 11/10/2019 21:45

I use co-wash instead of shampoo and I do not towel dry my hair anymore - I use an old t-shirt, as it's meant to prevent frizz / static. I try not to brush or blow dry it too much and I never straighten it.

I definitely think those things have made a difference for me. My hair just sits better and is in much better condition.

thisenglishlife · 12/10/2019 10:27

I think your hair will loads betters up than down. Learn lots of plaits, ponytails, twists and bun styles. Buy some clips and clamps and other accessories.

Plait it every night. That way, when you want to wear it down, it'll be a little wavy in the morning.
