Birkenstocks

Please tell me I haven’t wasted £60!
I succumbed and bought a pair yesterday, pottered about the house in them, not really feeling the comfort but aware they need breaking in...
Oh my goodness, my poor achy feet this morning. My arches are feeling sore and bruised😩.
I do have slightly flat feet, not everso and thought these sandals might be supportive
Please assure me this is normal and I haven’t just chucked sixty quid down the drain.

Does it really get better!? 😬

Stick with them, it does get better. I was the same when I first got mine but persevered and now they’re so comfy. I read online to try bending them a bit to soften the cork and that seemed to help a little. I wear mine all the time now and love them.

You need to break them in, try wearing them in the evenings only for a couple of weeks and then gradually wear them for longer periods. Eventually you will no longer notice you're wearing them.

ZaraW · 29/07/2019 15:22

I guess it depends on your feet. Birkenstocks are one of the very few sandals or shoes I don't need to break in. My feet love them. Good luck they are really comfortable so worth persevering with.

wickedfairy · 29/07/2019 15:26

My pair absolutely killed me. But once broken in, they were the comfiest things ever. Stick with it!

LynetteScavo · 29/07/2019 15:28

Stick with them

I decided to walk across LA in a brand new pair and wore my foot through to the bone.

However, once my foot healed I wore those sandals for years and years.

Which style do you have?

CarlaJones · 29/07/2019 15:35

I've worn Birkenstocks for years with no problems but my new ones keep causing blisters on one of the arches of my feet. Im wondering if it's because my feet have got flatter or if the insteps of the shoes have got higher

MaryLennoxsScowl · 29/07/2019 17:16

I’ve been unable to break mine in! They’re the kind with only one strap, and they give me blisters on the soles and tops of my feet! But if I loosen the strap then they fall off. I’ve had them two summers and have basically given up.

ZazieTheCat · 29/07/2019 19:03

@MaryLennoxsScowl have you tried Compeed Blister Stick? I have pair of tan leather Madrid (one strap) Birkenstocks and the blister stick got me through walking round Madrid in them. I got it in desperation in a 24 hour pharmacy, thought it was worth as shot as I like their plasters, and it really worked. Also used it in between my toes with a new pair of toe post sandals I wore out at night, and it did the job there too.

BuildBuildings · 29/07/2019 19:05

You do need to break them in a little bit. I wear mine constantly in the summer they are so comfortable. Stick with it.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 29/07/2019 20:10

@ZazietheCat I’ve never heard of that! I do have awful feet for getting blistered so I’ll definitely give it a try. And it would be nice if I could get them to the comfortable point because they were too expensive not to use! Thanks!

Lamentations · 29/07/2019 22:18

Which ones have you got OP? I love a Birkenstock, despite all the hate on the '3 things not to be caught dead in' thread.

I have Gizeh EVAs and suede Arizonas with the soft footbed, both of which have been very comfortable from the off. A pair of Madrids a few years back weren't so great but I think it's because there's not much to keep them attached to your feet.

I want some felt Bostons or Amsterdams for the autumn to wear with socks.

Molly333 · 29/07/2019 23:24

I never ever got on with them

Cherry321 · 29/07/2019 23:29

Yup I charity shopped mine. They weren’t comfortable.

RandomMess · 29/07/2019 23:40

Hopefully you didn't buy them too big...

I never have to break mine in 🤷🏽‍♀️

stillstanding51 · 30/07/2019 11:32

Well... slightly, ever so slightly better today
Had a play with the straps and have both on the tightest fitting and it seems to help
Fingers crossed... I’m expecting total bliss from these monsters! 😉

I got my first pair a couple of months ago. At first my feet ached and I could not imagine being able to wear them but having broken them in I have to say I love them.

IScreamForIceCreams · 01/08/2019 17:18

They do eventually get comfy. I got mine 6 years ago and still going strong!
