To dyson (hairdryer) or not to dyson...

Is a dyson much quicker for drying very very thick/wavy hair?

A friend has recommended a dyson having loved it on her very curly hair. DD and I have very thick/wavy hair but we tend to only use a hairdryer to blast it enough to not have wet hair going out rather than a “proper blow dry”. Even “blasting” takes 30mins+ on DD’s waistlength thick, thick hair with the cheap-ish babylis I’ve currently got.

Is a Dyson much faster?

Why does anyone buy Dyson? Genuine question. As far as I can gather he campaigned for Brexit but moved his manufacturing out of UK.

LoafofSellotape · 29/07/2019 08:09

I don't rate Dysons and I suspect the amazing reviews are from people who didn't have experience of good hairdriers.

I would invest in a Parlux,they're around £60.

Daffodil2018 · 29/07/2019 08:10

I haven't tried a Dyson but would 100% recommend a Parlux. My hairdresser uses one and I'm so happy with mine. It's light, powerful and the hot and cold are properly hot and cold IYSWIM. It's also a fraction of the price of a Dyson!

AuntieMarys · 29/07/2019 08:11

Parlux are better. Only positive thing about my Dyson is that it is light.

LoafofSellotape · 29/07/2019 08:15

Light but they screechGrin

thekingfisher · 29/07/2019 08:16

I love my dyson styler thing (airwrap) because of the styling tools - round brush and straight paddle are so very good and leave my hair beautifully soft and shiny. I don't use the hairdryer function at all really.

I bought the straightforward hairdryer and returned it as it just blew my fine but a lot of it hair just into a birds nest.

If you buy from dyson directly I believe you can buy on a 30 day trial.... I would recommend this

LoafofSellotape · 29/07/2019 08:18

It's a full size salon hairdrier despite its name.

LandaB · 29/07/2019 08:22

I bought a Dyson amid the hype of people saying it was the best thing since sliced bread, I found it no quicker and the magnetic nozzle kept falling off. Needless to say I am back to my Parlux.

rededucator · 29/07/2019 08:25

Which colour of Parlux do people enjoy?

Catsbooksandflowers · 29/07/2019 08:26

Honestly, I really, really regret buying mine. I got it on a total stupid impulse and it’s awful! It flattens my hair, doesn’t dry it properly and is difficult to hold. I hate it.

LoafofSellotape · 29/07/2019 08:44

The other big design flaw with the Parlux ime is the buttons are in the wrong place unless you stop completely and do it. With a Parlux they are where they should be.

Boilingfrog · 29/07/2019 08:45

What parlux do people have? I must say that I LOVE my dyson, it’s a quick, acceptable blow dry (esp if done with one of those brushes that speeds drying) in 10-15 minutes and no other hairdryer has ever done that for me. I think I had a T3 before and dyson is much, much better.

However the fancy air wrap thing is a big I scam. Feels like a prototype, not a finished product.

Dyson dryer, speedy drying brush (available in Superdrug) and babyliss big hair for very top layer only is salon-worthy dry for me in 20 mins.

Actually life-changing.

LoafofSellotape · 29/07/2019 08:45

I had a red Parlux compact for 8 ish years and now have a gold Avalon.

I'm known for being a tight arse but I bought one of these - from QVC so I could return if it was rubbish.

I have thick hair and wash it every day. I can go from wet hair to "acceptable for work" hair in 5 minutes. That's not super posh hair, but acceptable and completely dry.

if I'm meant to look nice, then add in another 2 minutes with babyliss big hair and I'm all set!

I cut my own hair - so this is how I rate spending on hair!! But the Dyson is such a time saver.

LoafofSellotape · 29/07/2019 08:50

Rosa what hairdrier did you use before the Dyson?

RosaWaiting · 29/07/2019 08:52

Loaf it was a Babyliss - I can't remember which one but it was high wattage so meant to be good for fast drying but was nothing compared to the Dyson.

Boilingfrog · 29/07/2019 09:07

rosa we clearly have similar hair!

5 mins - acceptable
10-15 - vair naice
20 (with more extensive babyliss) - amazing

It’s important to note that this is from a standing start where I could blow dry my hair well but never did as just never ever had 30-40 mins to spare. Now I pretty much always do it.

LoafofSellotape · 29/07/2019 09:09

Big wattage doesn't always mean powerful,it's the motor that is the important thing apparentlyGrin

I so wanted to like the Dyson but I ended up with straw hair and I need proper oomph for my thick hair and it just didn't cut the mustard.

Oh well,saves myself some penniesSmile

eurochick · 29/07/2019 09:37

I love my dyson. It is so much quicker, and my hair is in better condition as it uses less heat.

I'm not sure I'd buy a dyson product now though, because of the Brexit hypocrisy.

Butterfly44 · 29/07/2019 10:03

I love my Dyson hairdryer!! I bought mine second hand off eBay as a treat and it wonderful. I would try one out first! I bought mine after testing out my sister's.

fluffybottom · 29/07/2019 10:09

Love my dyson. I have very thick long straight hair which used to take ages to dry. I found I can't just tip my head and shake the hairdryer quickly through it anymore, I have to go section by section with a brush but the result is very smooth, shiny hair that dries within 10 mins.

MrsXx4 · 29/07/2019 10:14

My dyson airwrap is a life changer for me!! It comes with the hairdryer attachment. I didn’t want one but husband bought me it for my birthday and there’s no going back for me! I have amazing hair every day now!

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 29/07/2019 10:36

I currently have a Dyson, and previously had a Parlux. I would 100% have got a Parlux again after the old one died, but it happened right after DH got an unexpected bonus, bought himself a fancy fitness tracker, and then felt guilty and told me I had to treat myself - so I did!

My thoughts are - I really like the Dyson. The motor being the in the handle makes it feel a lot lighter to use, and I love the magnetic accessories. I also really like the heat and power settings, I find them very user friendly. It is a lot quieter than a standard hairdryer, and I really like the fact that it doesn't ever accidentally suck hair in through the inlet. It does dry my (fine but copious) hair very quickly.

However - I don't think it dries my hair noticeably quicker than the Parlux did, the Parlux was a revelation after decades of cheap hairdryers and was a massive step up. the Dyson might be a tab quicker, but there isn't a lot in it.

Because the Parlux functioned so well, when the Dyson dies, I'm not sure I would be able to justify the increased cost to replace it, and I am as disgusted by James Dyson's shoddy Post-Brexit behaviour as some PPs, which would further put me off buying another one.

I think if speed increase is your main aim, definitely try a Parlux - even buying the most expensive one, you'll still have around £200 left in your purse.

browzingss · 29/07/2019 10:47

I have a GHD air. It’s more than fine for it’s purpose, it’s a tiny bit on the heavy side but that is negligible. I can do whatever I want with my hair with it, always looks good. Definitely see a difference with using this vs a shitty cheap one. I had my first one for 4 years then ended up repurchasing as I was that happy with it.

My salon uses a Dyson and if I’m being honest, I don’t really like it. I don’t see a massive difference between a dyson blowdry and the blowdry I can achieve with my GHD air at home, as the dyson leaves my hair flat and limp. Yes it dries my hair quickly, but it lacks a bit of finesse. I much prefer a salon blowdry with a normal hairdryer (not sure what they use!) for volume & shine.

My hair is a fine long bob though, so it needs a bit of styling. If you have long/thick hair I suppose rapid/blast drying would leave you with a decent style.
