12 YO DD wants to dye hair ends

As it's the summer I am willing to indulge her. She wants red but I think I'll suggest pink as a compromise. Her hair is fine, mousy brown. What product should I use to ensure it doesn't damage her hair and more importantly, that it comes off in time for school?

My DD wants to do this too!

Gwynfluff · 29/07/2019 07:50

My dd with same colour hair used the Schwarzkopf Live pink. She did her whole head and needed about 3 boxes of it. Even then it wasn’t that vivid, so I’m sure a lesser amount and just on the ends would fade over the next 5 weeks.

MissMatchedClaws · 29/07/2019 07:51

I’ve been using L’oreal Colorista on DD’s Hair. Blue or purple (or both). It is 20 washes according to the package, but we found it had all but gone before that.

Mrsjayy · 29/07/2019 07:53

Are you getting it done at the hairdressers or box dyes ? Dd used tp use the live colours by schwarzkapf (SP) . Red will wash out better than pink which goes white

chasingseagulls · 29/07/2019 07:53

What's the problem with red and why is pink more preferable? They're just colours? Doesn't seem like a compromise more like you wanting to maintain control. Give her what she wants, she's just becoming a teenager, there will be bigger battles to fight soon!

Can't advise on the product, but in terms of school, can't she agree to a trim at the end of the holiday, would that remove most of the colour?

Singleandproud · 29/07/2019 07:54

By all means indulge her but just be warned it often doesnt come out before school regardless of what the bottle says. We always have several students who come back after the summer and either have to cut their hair or wear it in a bun until it finally washes out, for one of my students it lasted until Oct Halfterm.

I think pink would be better as it’ll wash out faster.

BlueMoonAndRedNose · 29/07/2019 07:57

Ha ha chasingseagulls you're not wrong there!!! I'm certainly struggling with this opinionated being who wants things HER way. I mean how dare she???? Grin

So yeah fine, I guess I can agree to whatever colour makes her happy.

Will definitely do it at home!!

Loreal do coloured dip dye kits in a range of colours. Each pack advises you on whether it is suitable for blonde or brown hair. The general rule is the lighter colours don't work the darker the hair.

As a word of caution: the blue/teal one looks great when done but doesn't wash out/fade properly. I know at least 3 or 4 people who've used that colour and had a greeny mess on the ends of their hair as it faded. 1 had to have it cut out before they went back to work because it looked horrible.

ems137 · 29/07/2019 07:59

To get a bright, or even noticeable colour you usually have to bleach the hair first. If you just put red or pink on mousy brown hair it won't be that noticeable.

Grumpyoldblonde · 29/07/2019 08:40

Mine has same hair colour and we use the live Schwarzkopf one which is pretty vivid, I use a pastry brush to apply it. Fades over quite a few washes.

Insertdeadcatsnamehere · 29/07/2019 08:48

If her hair is light enough get some Manic Panic or Directions hair dye. Both come in loads of colours, bright enough to cover without bleach unless hair is fairly dark (i'd say mid brown or darker). They're like pots of very brightly coloured conditioner, easy to slap on the end, won't ruin her hair and wash out in a couple of weeks.

BlueMoonAndRedNose · 29/07/2019 08:53

I'd say her hair is a light brown, used to be blonde but not anymore, has a lot of warmth in it, can go brassy.

It sounds like the best option might be live Schwarzkopf?

Pick how much of the "ends" you are dying with the assumption that you might need to cut it off at the end of summer.

BlueMoonAndRedNose · 29/07/2019 09:06

Good tips everyone, thank you.
Off to Superdrug with the girl. This is in fact the only way she's going to agree to going for a walk with me.

Agree manic panic pots applied to the end with a brush.

user12398798768657 · 29/07/2019 09:09

Just be aware that she might have to cut her hair shorter in September. DN dyed his blue a couple of summers ago. It did not fade out in time for school and he ended up having to go very short.

CMOTDibbler · 29/07/2019 09:31

My ds is currently sporting Manic Panic electric lizard on the ends of his hair - I bleached the ends first. He'll have it cut out on September 4th! He's loving the very bright colour and contrast - he's 13

WrongKindOfFace · 29/07/2019 11:00

Top tip, if it’s still quite bright at the end of the summer send her swimming a few times as it soon fades it.

Schwarzkopf do kits with three colours in which work quite well, although nowhere near as bright as the box. Use fat kids paintbrushes and kitchen foil to apply,.
