Highlights before OR after holiday?

I’m at that sticky point. My hair needs my highlights being done. Not urgently but a nice brighten up will make a difference.

BUT I’m off on a very sunny holiday and I have heard that intense sun should be avoided post highlight.

So here’s the dilemma

  1. Have highlights done 5 days *before* sunny holiday (7 days duration)
Or
  1. Have highlights done few days after holiday

I’m a single parent and the holiday is about the children having fun, so won’t involve cocktails at sunset and long lingering meals out. Consequently, I’m not bothered about how I “look” on holiday.

However - if sun will makes no odds to highlights 5 days post doing, then I’ll have it done pre holiday simply because it’s more convenient for me to have done then!

But if there’s a risk of making the colour funny by exposing it to intense sun 5 days post having it done - then I’ll wait.

Sorry for this require ridiculous navel-gazing question. As you might have guessed, I am child free and going through a to do list, which means I actually have time to consider this kind of thing!

Many thanks

Wait until after the holiday - the sun will lighten it anyway so you wouldn’t know what colour you’d end up with if you had them done before you went.

I’m having this exact dilemma right now and go on holiday this week. My hair has gone that horrible yellow colour so I’m hoping the sun will lighten it up. If not I once put lemon juice on my hair in the sun and it quite literally went white but I’m not sure that’s a good look anymore!

Any hairdressers out there?!

I got mine done the week before I went on holiday. They were fine

dementedpixie · 28/07/2019 17:07

And the hairdresser seemed to think it was ok to do it before as well. I was away for 2 weeks in Spain

TheBeastInMsRooneysRoom · 28/07/2019 17:08

Do them after. Getting in and out of chlorinated water will affect the tone and dry them out.

Lovemenorca · 28/07/2019 17:21

I won’t be swimming. Pool edge with a book!

@dementedpixie how long before you went?

1 week. Got them done Saturday then went away the next saturday. Hairdresser just checked I'd be washing it at least once before I went and said they'd be fine. I clipped it up if I was in the pool

crazycatbaby · 28/07/2019 17:24

Hairdresser here Smileit doesn't really make much difference tbh; obviously sun will fade toner/any lowlights our quicker, but I'd always say to use a spf spray on hair and ideally a hat so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Lovemenorca · 28/07/2019 17:26

@crazycatbaby

Thank you! What spray do you recommend?

I had mine done before I went away for a week at the end of June.
I went swimming in the sea but not the pool.
I did tend to wear a baseball cap when out in the sun as my scalp burns easily.
My hair got even blonder thanks to the sun & sea but otherwise my highlights were fine & I'm happy with my colour for now.

tierraJ · 28/07/2019 17:53

Boots Soltan do a hair & scalp protection spray I think, my mum has it.
I should've used a protective spray but didn't. However I did use a colour care shampoo & conditioner in the shower during my holiday.

Cohle · 28/07/2019 18:04

I'd vote after. The sun will really fade any toner and you'll have to spend the whole trip faffing around covering your hair, keeping it out of the pool etc.

Sagradafamiliar · 28/07/2019 18:13

I would get it out of the way beforehand but then again I always protect my hair from the sun (including during the mad weather we've just had in the UK).
