What do I need for Autumn to Winter? Generally for work but wardrobe overhaul

I'm getting fed up with trawling the websites and getting no where...

With the weather being so grim turned my mind to I need to buy some clothes (more or less whole new wardrobe needed due to weight loss.) Mainly for work but also casual. But been years since I've done it (Children and just added odd pieces)

I'm a bit of a classic person, feel a bit stupid wearing anything too trendy but not adverse to trying anything. Size 18 generally in proportion.

For work I need to wear flat shoes- so thinking tunic style dresses with thick tights and brogues. Is this even the right thing these days? I also like 7/8 trousers with blouses (what I'm wearing at the moment) but I'll not be able to cope with cold ankles!

Casual
I know I need to new boots- tan ankle boots? Still the right thing?

Anything else I need to be looking at for a wardrobe overhaul?

As ever hoping wonderful mumsnetters can help me out...

Watching with interest as I need to redo my whole wardrobe in a months time when I return to the UK. Like you, I don't know what I should be buying and almost need a shopping list!

Rainbowsandrascals · 28/07/2019 09:29

Sorry, no help but also interested! The shops are starting to get the autumn clothes in now so it should be easy to see what’s out there.

I am also in the same boat. But on a ridiculously tight budget. So am saving each week. This month I cleared out and got measured for and bought a complete week's worth of underware plus an extra few bras such as crossover and strapless. I do - - lazy amount a moderate amount of exercise and the fitter advised me that she wears primark sports bras so I bought some which are really comfortable. But this means that everything will look better - - I hope
August will be tshirts and blouses or else a black cover every day event or funeral.
I Máire Kondo my wardrobe and really have nothing left 😞

I can't wait to shop for autumn clothes. My favourite season and I'm an 'autumn', so I find the colours suit me much better than the lighter, spring/ summer colours. I love buying snuggly knit wear and long sleeved tops that cover everything up.

I've not got much to spend, so normally shop at H&M, New Look, etc.

Top of my list this year are some new tan boots, a biker style leather jacket and a couple of jersey dresses for work.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/07/2019 09:58

I've bought a couple of nice autumn work things in the tail end of the Jigsaw sale - a pencil skirt, a dress.

I want to get a new black blazer and perhaps a sort of black jersey shrug/cropped jacket thing.

Thinking of getting a couple more pairs of Boden Richmond trousers - I just shove popsocks or fishnets under them when it's colder.

I'm still looking for the holy grail of plain, great quality t-shirts for work though.

For dresses, I tend to get the least hideous I can find in m&s or Fatface.

Good to know I am not alone in the not knowing what’s ‘in’! For years I’ve had a limited selection due to buying plus sizes and all of a sudden I’m a bit bewildered and not even knowing where to begin! I know I’ve got a while to go but suddenly I go on ASOS etc and there are 1000s and 1000s is choices rather than pages

Good shout re the fishnets/ pop socks.

I have four pairs of boots in my wardrobe that I haven't worn yet Blush so I reckon I'm sorted there .

Also a couple of pairs of satin flat shoes with an elastic cross over at the ankle , they'll come on holiday with me (I intend to do lots of lounging about in the evening and not much walking)

I bought a black/white blazer from H&M (to wear with the jeggings/boots) and an M&S parka so I'm sorted for coats .

Love A/W clothes

On my To Buy List:

black jeggings
some new Chelsea boots in black (M&S)
some nice jumpers - probably Uniqlo if they have what I want

happytobemrsg · 28/07/2019 19:43

Here are my personal capsule wardrobe thoughts for this autumn.

I want as many ‘ready made outfits’ as possible as I’ll have 2 DC to run after so some long sleeve midi dresses (I have 3 already in white/khaki/dark grey so will perhaps add 2 more) & jumpsuits (I don’t have any yet so I need perhaps 2 or 3). Then thin tops to go under them & layer.

I’ve already got skinny jeans I love (3 pairs - khaki, grey & black) but would like to get some slim jumpers which I can “half tuck” into my jeans (say 5?). I don’t really like skirts on me 🤷‍♀️ so I’m ignoring them completely.

Jacket wise I’d like to buy a (faux?) leather jacket (my first!) to wear with my dresses / jumpsuits & a couple of chunky knit scarves to wear with it.

My ankle boots are knackered so I’d like another black pair & perhaps some tan ones as well.

I’ve had my colours done so I tend to stick to a palette of khaki, burgundy, off white & mustard. Black is fine for bottoms (I’m a pear so it’s slimming) & while light grey drains me, darker greys look fine. I don’t really “do” patterns so it means I can make different looks easily by switching up accessories (I love jewellery & headbands/hair clips). By sticking to my colour palette I know everything goes with everything else. I try to only buy things which can be worn in at least 3 outfits.

happytobemrsg · 28/07/2019 19:49

So aside from bags/accessories that adds up to:
5 dresses
2 jumpsuits
3 jeans
5 thin jumpers
2 boots
1 jacket

muddledmidget · 28/07/2019 20:34

I've been pondering my shopping list, and I think it looks like this:
2 x jeans
4 x long sleeved tops
3 x nice knit wear jumpers
1 x winter coat
1 x ankle boots
1 x work shoes
2 x work trousers - grey and black
3 x work appropriate tops
3 x bras

If someone would like to just choose for me (size 12 and size 5 shoe) and put it all in a shopping basket so I just have to click buy that would be amazing, budget up to £1000!

slipperyeel · 28/07/2019 20:50

I reckon you would get masses of wear out of just:

Good pair of dark denim straight leg jeans
White shirt
Plain T-shirt’s in black and white
V neck jumper
Black dress, midi, can be dressed up or down
Leather jacket / blazer
Ankle boots (Chelsea or lace up)
White leather trainers

As good quality as you can afford for basics will be well worth it

Deathraystare · 30/07/2019 19:08

I am in a similar boat. have an interview coming up. Have to wear white shirt and trousers. A plain white shirt. It is hard to get something that does not contain viscose (makes me sweat torrents. Need to have some stretch. I do laugh (a hollow laugh) when you get on a site, click on work wear and you see what I would call party wear - harem pants et al.

I know not everywhere is strict with a dress code but blimey!
