Acne advice 🥺

Hi

I posted a thread on here about my skin a while ago as I have hormonal chin spots suspected PCOS. Won’t go into detail about my skins ups and downs as it’s on other thread however after a few years clear my chin spots have returned in full force.

Tried la Roche posay 3 step system and after 6 weeks skin not improved so I went to the doctors yesterday.

I’ve been prescribed lymcycline anti Biotic tablets and Epiduo cream.. I’ve used before when I was younger and acne was awful but I can’t remember if they work.. I also was on doxycycline when younger and I know that didn’t work.

I’ve used BP 2.5 percent for years and it doesn’t seem to work anymore however Epiduo is also a retanoid too so giving this ago.

I used it last night for the first time.. I cleanse with cetaphil always have done and as of the last two months I’ve been using cerave moisturiser for dry to very dry skin.. I used the tiniest amount on the chin only and my god this morning my skin was dry as hell!! Even after moisturising. From doing some research I’ve seen derms recommend cetaphil moisturiser when using Epiduo so have bought that today.

I’m just wondering if anyone has any advice on using either or both of these treatments for acne ? Did it work ? How long did it take ? I’m worried that as it’s a retanoid I’m going to purge badly ! I’m also worried about the dryness as it can’t be from the BP as my skins used to that so it must be the retanoid aspect.

I’m going on holiday in 3 weeks and I really don’t want my looking looking even worse and also peeling off. I’m also worried about exposure to sun light as were I’m going is in the 30s and I want to be able to sunbathe.. bearing in mind I’m
Not putting this all over my face just my chin.

Any tips / advice are welcome

Thanks

Have you tried differin?

Troton · 28/07/2019 09:31

I wonder why benzoyl peroxide has stopped working. I believed you can’t become immune to it as the bacteria don’t build up resistance. Sounds silly but is your benzoyl peroxide in date still?
I’ve tri d epiduo and like you it burns my skin terribly :-(

Lau247 · 28/07/2019 09:59

@Twixes I haven’t tried that yet as thought I’d try this first

@Troton good point about it being out of date just checked it and it’s october 19 so still In date. I heard your skin can’t become resistant too so not sure what’s happening. I’ve heard of Epiduo burning and making skin red etc it doesn’t burn mine or make it red it was just incredibly dry when I put make on yday so worrying what it’s going to be like at work this week as going make up free isn’t an option.

I used moisturiser about half hour after the Epiduo last night and my skin doesn’t seem as dry today but you can usually only tell with make up on anyway. I’m just worried for a massive purge

Daughter is currently on epiduo due to bad acne.
It took about three to four months to clear and boy did it get worse before it got better. Her face was red raw with dry skin - however it has done the trick and cleared it all up.

I’m currently using epiduo. I cover my whole face every night before bed.

I did have slightly red skin for a few days, especially around the eyes, so go easy there.

It has REALLY cleared up my skin too.

I just cleanse then apply it last thing at night.

Dianette was the only thing that cleared my skin completely. My gp changed my pill as he said dianette wasn’t safe for long term usage and I started getting cystic spots around my chin again (but only one or two). I decided to come off the pill this year and have done some research and invested in a proper skincare regime and cut down on dairy.

I now use glycolic acid toner, niacinamide, vitamin c, oil free make up and an oil free gel moisturiser along with some salicylic acid to zap any spots that do come through. I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s somthing that will never completely go away but at least I have them under control now and can cope with one or two at the time of the month. I’m 35 now so it’s not something I’m likely to just grow out of. Good skincare products can keep things under control and has made the rest of my skin look really good

Troton · 28/07/2019 11:54

Op have you changed anything else in your skin care?

Troton · 28/07/2019 11:56

I use benzoyl peroxide and found when I used effaclar duo alongside it I actually got more spots despite using the benzoyl peroxide religiously. Just wondering if you could be using anything else that’s irritating your skin?

Thanks for all your replies .. I have been on Epiduo and the tablets now since Friday and I am shocked ! The drying stopped after I bought the cetaphil and used it morning and night not just morning and I have not had a single new spot. And it’s the time of the month . my old ones are practically gone albeit I have ALOT of red marks from old spots but my chin is basically smooth to touch.

I was expecting a huge purge but i don’t know if my skin has purged already from the Epiduo so there’s nothing left as I was getting 2-3 spots a day with that. I am thinking this is too good to be true as from what I’ve read about Epiduo the retanoid aspect always causes a purge and and Bad one
