Can I query my hairdressers bill after I’ve paid and left?

Had my hair done today at my normal hairdressers. I had balayage, roots and a cut. I usually have 2 out of 3 of these done at any one appointment, but have had all 3 done before. This appointment cost £70 more than I’ve ever paid them before. I was in a rush (as they took forever) and although I did ask why is it so much more than usual the girl just said it was the balayage that pushed the price up and I just paid and left as I needed to meet dh.

I’m kicking myself now for not having pushed this and asked to see the breakdown of the costs. Do they keep records of what they did? If I phone them on Monday will I just sound like an idiot?

Definitely call them.

How much did it previously cost when you had all 3 services? Perhaps their prices have increased since, eg if your stylist had a promotion.

Balayage highlights isn’t a service that you get at every appointment, it’s more likely that you had roots & cut together more often which would be cheaper. Does your receipt list the costs for each service or do they have their prices listed on their website/social media sites?

Yeah it could be that the last time you had a junior stylist and this time you had an experienced stylist. Worth asking!

I think my colourist has been promoted actually, and the. I also remembered that last time I went in just to have my roots done that was £54 on its own so maybe it’s been longer than I think since I had everything done together! It cost £222 and I haven’t previously paid more than about £160 so it was just a bit of a 😧 moment!! However it was my haircut for my 40th and I do love it so I guess I should focus on that!! And next time I go I’ll double check on the phone re the cost first to avoid a small heart attack!
Annoyingly their online price list does not have the cost of balayage on there.

YANBU. I've had this the last couple of times I've been to the hairdressers- turns out they've added a tenner on for 'deep conditioning' and start d charging for each service separately (I.e a colour and a cut and blow dry when technicians you would expect a blow dry as part of the colour so should just be charge for cut and colour).

I've changed hairdressers (from a small chain to a self employed mobile hairdressers) because I'm fed up with it plus the constant questions about "what shampoo do you use... oh, you should use this £15 a bottle stuff that we flog.." Hmm

My hairdresser has started printing off the itemised cost after the initial 5 minutes of colour cut and treatment chat. Not sure if it’s just her or a company policy but I find it very reassuring and transparent. Such a simple thing to implement.

To be honest that does sound quite high, what do you get done with your roots? My salon, which is premium/expensive, would have probably included the root services in the balayage cost.

Musicalstatues · 28/07/2019 11:05

To be honest @browzingss I’m pretty sure it has been included before. They had a franchisee changeover last year and a lot of different staff and while I’ve always still been happy with my hair I do think the service is not the same and they are definitely more about trying to squeeze more money out of you than before. Very torn as I’ve been going to the same hairdressers for nearly 20 years and nearly always been very happy so I’m a bit scared to try somewhere new!

Surely the roots would be included in the balayage price? Yes, definitely query it with them, maybe the assistant got confused with the pricing.

As a side note, I HATE when hairdressers charge for each individual item (e.g. deep conditioning, scalp massage, blow dry etc.) It's like the magic buttons on a taxi driver's meter that suddenly increase the fare with no transparency.

If you have been a loyal client for 20 years, they won’t begrudge you calling to clarify the charges
