Is this work appropriate?

I'm starting a new job. My previous one had a casual dress code. You could wear anything to work as long as it wasn't too revealing. This new job has a dress code. Women are required to wear "office wear" and jeans and t shirts are strictly not allowed. I don't have a lot of office wear and I'm picking out clothes to wear from my closet. Are these dresses work appropriate? They are both sleeveless so I'm thinking if I threw on a jacket over them it would make it more acceptable for work.

I think the first one is a bit short and casual to be honest. You might find, once you get there, that it's ok...but the second one is nice. Wear that to start with and suss out how the others dress.

Thanks @HennyPennyHorror. I knew the first one was pushing it. Seems like I have to go buy some clothes soon.

2nd one looks fine, hope job goes well!

MaybeitsMaybelline · 27/07/2019 06:16

Also agree, first one too short, second perfect.

Cairies · 27/07/2019 06:19

You've got nice legs, btw ;)

Second looks good to me; agree with others about the first. Hope your new job goes well.

If you are starting the job now aren't they too hot? I think the second looks better than first. However, you could start as you mean to go on, with a capsule wardrobe that becomes a 'uniform' for work.
An easy look for office is H&M ankle cigarette trousers in black/navy/grey (£12-18) and interchange each day with a different cotton shirt. Wearing trousers everyday means you never have to think about bare legs/tights. Just get up and go without decisions. Crisp white or light blue soft shirts from H&M, Uniqglo or M&S would be easy staples. Loafers, or the shoes you are wearing in the 2nd photo and a short cardigan (H&M fine knit £9) for cooler days (they fit in a bag easily). If you have the budget, you could spend £70-80 now in H&M on 2 pairs of trousers, 4-5 shirts, 1 cardigan and you'd have enough clothes for a week and would blend in. Treating it like a uniform keeps the cost down and you wear the clothes you love at weekends.

Thanks @DianaT1969. My office building is air conditioned so I don't have to worry about heat while in the office. I've been looking at ordering some work blouses from uniqlo but will check out M&S as well though it is quite pricey for me. But I guess the investment is worth it. I'm going to H&M today to take a look at their pants.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone :)

Good luck with your new job! I'd be inclined to over-dress smartly to start with so you can see what everyone else is wearing and then introduce more casual things as time goes on. H&M is great for work stuff at a reasonable price, also TK Maxx.

Good luck with your new job. I saw some nice work shirts in New Look today, they had them in cream and pink.
