Help! Bedding, ridiculous sizing and just aaargh!

DD is off to Uni in Sept. She has been allocated her room, she's bought new towels and cooking stuff and it's all very exciting, BUT the bed is 7' x 4'.

Where on earth can we find a fitted sheet for that?

Please help me, I keep thinking I've found one but then it turns out to be 3'6" wide (and costs £1000 or something).

Apparently all the beds in that building are that size - why?!!!!

Buy a flat sheet?

NannyR · 24/07/2019 14:48

What about just using a flat sheet and tucking it under the mattress, hospital-corners style?

PinkDaffodil2 · 24/07/2019 14:49

Flat sheet and size up for duvet?

PerspicaciaTick · 24/07/2019 14:53

It is known as a "small double" or a "3/4 bed" and is an standard, albeit unusual, size. Dunelm do fitted sheets for 3/4 beds from 9 quid.

stucknoue · 24/07/2019 14:56

It's a small double, sheets widely available (it's 6 long) beds unless specially commissioned are not 7'! Most universities are putting them into rooms if they are large enough.

dementedpixie · 24/07/2019 14:58

If its a small double then just buy standard double bed size bedding. It might be a little large but better than too small. I use double bed fitted sheets on dd's small double bed

Jux · 24/07/2019 14:58

Are they 7' long, Perspicacia? I thought I'd looked at Dunelm and not found any. I'll go back....Smile

Yes, alternative is flat sheet, maybe do some c&p, as it were.

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 24/07/2019 15:02

That's longer than a super king bed. Are you sure 7ft is correct?

RainOrSun · 24/07/2019 15:02

7 foot long will be the hard part.
My kids have just moved out of a 6'x4' bed. If this is what she has, use a double fitted sheet, and it fits three sides, tuck the extra in down one side.
If its truly 7' long... eeck.

Jux · 24/07/2019 15:04

Dunelm sheets are short by 9".

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 24/07/2019 15:05

I'd double check the length as that is not a standard bed length in the uk

babysharkah · 24/07/2019 15:07

That's not a standard bed size - are you sure?

DogsandBoysmeanMud · 24/07/2019 15:08

They have 7ft beds at my sons boarding school but the 1 ft extension is removable and doesn't have a sheet on. It's great for tall boys like my son but unnecessary for the normal population.

PerspicaciaTick · 24/07/2019 16:40

Honestly, I've put standard fitted sheets on my DDs longer than standard bed without a problem. Maybe buy ones with a deeper fit if you feel you need a bit of extra fabric.
Or flat sheets.

XingMing · 24/07/2019 17:25

Super king size flat sheets, from hotel suppliers. They are huge but once your DD has learnt to do tight hospital corners, they will stay tucked in and uncreased. I can't bear a rumpled bottom sheet.

Jux · 24/07/2019 19:27

Dogs, I hoped/assumed they were like that, but a phone call confirmed that nothing so sensible was in place.

@dementedpixie,@babysharkah Yes, I know that's not a standard size - if it were a standard size, there'd be no problem and we'd just get sheets of the standard size.

Double and triple checked. Definitely not the standard size, definitely 7' x 4'.

Perspicacia, thanks, deeper fit might work. DD could get 3 sheets, cut one up and sew the extra bits onto the other two.

Now she is talking of mattress toppers "mum, do you know what students do on those beds?....." Grin No, no idea darling.

Big Bed Company has that size. Called Prince apparently. Not super cheap but not insanely expensive either.

catinboots99 · 24/07/2019 20:41

Amazon sell small double fitted sheets (4ft wide, normal length)

catinboots99 · 24/07/2019 20:43

Sorry just saw the bit about 7ft long Shock

RainOrSun · 24/07/2019 20:52

£20, a bit too wide, but cutting down or tucking the extra underneath might be better than tacking stuff onto the end?

Lunafortheloveogod · 24/07/2019 21:03

Two flat sheets and a sewing machine? Cheapo ones from Argos or something? I

TheInvestigator · 24/07/2019 21:06

Buy white cotton from a fabric shop and see the elastic in. It's really not hard. Or do people not know how to sew anymore? I'm 30 and I can make a fitted sheet.

Jux · 26/07/2019 23:06

RainOrSun, thanks I've sent the link to dd.

TheInvestigator, yes dd makes all her clothes, including special things for re-enactments. I was just hoping to save her the trouble, as she has a multitude of things to do in the next month or so, which is wearing her out - she has ME.

If she wants a mattress topper back to a standard length fitted sheet and just put it over the topper!
