Hair falling out postpartum

Hey :)

Not sure if this fits into this category but couldn't find anywhere else to put it.

I am a first time mum of a beautiful 5 month old little girl. I am absolutely loving her and life and can't imagine a time without her now.

However, I absolutely hate my postpartum hair loss!! It's so thin now, I may as well just got bald ! And the colour has gone from a bright natural blonde to a really dull almost brown colour.

I am breastfeeding (though not sure if that's the main cause as I hear this happens to those who don't breastfeed too) My question is- has anyone else experience me the same ? when would be the best time to go to the salon to get my mop sorted out !? I am desperate to go , but do not want to make my hair worse my dying it / cutting it.

Any thoughts and similar experiences would be much appreciated :)

Thank you Smile

I shed so much post partum that I broke the hoover.
Ask around until you find a stylist that really understands hair. Don’t let just anyone loose on you. Before dc, it really made no difference who did my hair but nowadays it needs an expert.
My current stylist is very passionate and educated about hair types and strict about what I can and can’t do and the difference is huge. I was nearly on the point of shaving mine to a buzz cut

Mine was coming out in clumps at 5 months pp. Nearly 8 months now and it's all back to normal so it might be worth hanging on a few weeks as it will probably slow down soon. I had a few inches off the ends a couple of months ago to tidy it up but had really long hair at the time anyway and the loss was making it look (even) frizzier. Now regretting it and can't wait til it grows back!

Currently knitting my baby some clothes from my hair shedding. Might even get a scarf out of it 😏

Thank you everyone for the reassurance that I am not alone in this!! I think I will follow advice and hang on a bit longer to get it sorted out at the hairdressers - it isn't particularly long or in bad condition other than the dullness and lack of it now , so perhaps if I just suck it up , it might be for the best!!!

Eeek I never knew this was even a thing before having my little girl ! It's funny what pregnancy does to your body!!

I have no idea if this was a total fluke on my part but try Childs Farm strawberry and mint baby shampoo. Mine was coming out in handfuls til I ran out of my usual shampoo and had to use DD's, noticed within a day or two I was losing a lot less and it's still working months later. I'd love to know if it was just a coincidence somehow or if it really is the shampoo so really want someone else to try it! Smile

After both my babies, my hair fell out really badly. It has happened again in the 17 years since then and it is nearly always because I am iron deficient.

I requested copies of my blood test results and when I look back at blood tests results for the early years after my two were born, but iron levels were desperately low. Sometimes they were below the ranges used by the GPs but no one ever thought to suggest that I should supplement!

So, an iron supplement might be something to consider.

My hair shed was awful and in 2 phases after my daughter was born. It was utterly depressing. I'm 21 months post partum now and it's growing back I take a daily multi vitamin with extra iron as my levels are on the low side. If your bfeeding are you taking a supplement, it might help. But there's nothing you can do to stop it.

Oh op I had this so awfully. In fact dh put a picture of me up the other day and I was horrified by my bald spots in it! They said take vitamins but not sure it actually helped really - I think it's just a case of waiting it out. If you want your hair cut definitely go to one you trust, I had a fringe cut in to try and cover it and it looked ridiculous !

Can’t really comment on postpartum hair loss or why it happens, but I found that high strength iron supplements really helped my hair grow faster, I also take hair supplements (hair burst, nourikin) and a multivitamin too.

My ferritin levels were quite low, I also had a small amount of hair loss and lots of breakage so it felt like my hair was thinning as it wasn’t growing fast enough. My hair used to grow roughly 1-2 inches in 3 months, I can do that in 6 weeks now

Rustyigloo · 23/07/2019 16:06

I lost a lot of hair too around the 5/6 month mark too. I could drag handfuls out at a time. I was pretty alarmed but it seemed to stop as soon as it started.

I spoke to my hairdresser about it and she said that hair sheds less during pregnancy which is why it feels fuller. That excess hair is what then falls out postpartum. Even though id lost A LOT of hair she thought it wasnt any thinner than before pregnancy (if that makes sense)

Ironic that a vegan would be spamming so much sharelovex.
