Help! I am losing my hair and need a new style

It's currently in a chin length bob, with short fringe but I accidentally caught sight of the back of my head in a changing room the other day and it looked awful SadSadSad

I've been mulling it over ever since. I hadn't realised how bad it had got, but it looked like a bad combover, with thin hair over the top, and definite visible scalp. I've just checked the top, and the parting section is very wide and thin.

Can anyone suggest styles that won't look so shit?

I've had pixie cuts before, and am not averse to short, although I don't really have the facial bone structure to pull it off, it'd probably look better than I do now.

Hair is very fine too. I'm mid 40s if that helps.

Any advice? Please help me!

Not the answer you asked for, but have you been to your GP to see if there’s any cause for the hair loss? Do you take any supplements etc?

If you’ve looked into that, then definitely a shorter pixie do will appear to thicken your hair xx

Hormoanal · 19/07/2019 16:15

No I haven't been to the GP, figured it was just a combo of aging and bad luck.

No supplements either, do they actually work? Can anyone recommend any?

Hi OP

I have hair exactly as yours and I have find that having some highlights has really helped. Not loads, but they make it look thicker and then do actually thicken the hair a bit. And also help the scalp blend in. Hair fibres (like Toppik) help too.

I went to Dr and told it's just generic, seemed to be no other reason why

Hormoanal · 19/07/2019 16:33

Thanks Chartreuser What style do you have if you don't mind me asking?

I'm currently on pinterest in a sea of pixie cuts

Get your iron level checked- my started to thin when I had anaemia.

re Pixes - they can definitely help.... Go for a messy one you can wang a lot of hair product in.

I have this hair too and find that chucking in loads of styling powder helps massively. Builds up over days too - style with fingers and spray in place. I used to use the coloured fibres until I caught sight of myself from a different angle and realised that they had settled in clumps on my scalp in places Confused this happened more if I was a little sweaty or weather was humid. Not worth risking again!
I have a chin length wavy bob. Forgive me for asking but I can’t see how a pixie crop would help? Surely it would increase the visibility of the scalp with less hair to cover it over? I also have the strands of comb over parting thing going on but also find that highlights and keeping it well brushed and flattened down help.

Hi. I am the same age as you and my hair has been falling out. I went to the GP, had a blood test and it seems low iron is the problem. I have just started taking iron supplements and feel amazing! Can't comment on hair improvement yet but I am feeling a lot less tired.

I hope that you find something to help and agree with other posters - go for a check-up to rule out low iron etc.

swisscheeseplant · 19/07/2019 20:49

Have you had your thyroid checked?

GreyHare · 19/07/2019 22:47

I kept mine in a short bob but keep it close to the scalp on top and grew my fringe out, if I have any height on the crown or top you can see just how thin it was, I also had low iron/folate levels and B12 was low, I have started on vitamins and had a B12 shot and everything is back to normal now, my hair has thickened but is still thin on top, I have started taking Hair Jelly supplements but I'm only a few weeks in, but they had best work as they smell foul and I burp the rancid taste of them for an hour after taking.

Rosenspants · 20/07/2019 09:28

My hair has been thin near the top of my fringe for quite a few years now. Either pattern hair loss or an effect of HRT, I suppose. I can’t tell you how much this product helps.... really, I just dot it on the visible scalp and it sorts the problem visually. I continue to wear my hair long as a result. I’m quite old, 58 but don’t have much grey so use the medium brown.

Hormonal Do not be fobbed off by your Dr, there is something you can do, might not work for everyone, but it depends on why you are losing your hair
I was horrified to find bald patches especially at the back a few months ago, and almost had a panic attack it was so ba
I started taking Biotin and zinc, had thyroid checked,it was fine
Went to 2 different Drs at my practice,[ both female] both fobbed me off, but my own Dr was away, saw him when he got back, he gave me a prescription for steroid lotion, on my second lot now, and hair is growing back, but i have to say, what hair i have otherwise is growing like weeds, so fast i cant keep up with it,
I can ony assume it is the Biotin, go back to your Dr

justchecking1 · 20/07/2019 12:01

Same as me. I've gone for a pixie which has helped loads.

Also perfectil platinum vitamins seem to have helped a bit

Hormoanal · 20/07/2019 14:28

Thanks everyone. I have an appointment at doctors on an unrelated matter next week so may mention it then (bet they love that Blush )

Dogs I've avoided fibres due to fear that would happen, but forgive my ignorance what is styling powder?

Hair Jelly supplements sound delightful GreyHare please let me know if they work for you, as I don't fancy that if they don't Grin

Make sure as mentioned iron and also protein.

DogsLoveLakes · 22/07/2019 22:37

@Hormoanal - styling powder is a texturing product very much like the coloured fibres that adds thickness without the colour. It does make it feel quite coarse but makes mine look so much thicker and holds some body and shape rather than becoming straggly through the day. I can’t live without it now! It generally comes in a little pot - it goes a long way - and you shake it out like talc. It leaves no colour residue. I believe it’s the same kind of stuff that’s in dry shampoo and can feel quite drying but I don’t find that a problem as long as I use conditioner frequently and a clarifying shampoo every now and then. There are loads of brands. I’m currently using Schwarzkopf got2b powderful which I like best. Good luck!

So sorry, thankfully my hair is naturally frizzy wavy so I have a chin length textured Bob. It's so annoying as the hair at the back of my head (where it meets my neck) is thick and curly as I guess the baldness doesn't affect that area (my mum and Grandma both had this too, saw a GP many moons ago who did blood tests but was v dismissive but said it was just 'bad luck').

It's starting to get so bad that when I put my hair up the scalp at the front is shiny and balls, but I've decided to just f*CK it in a way, there literally is nothing I can do about it yet but am growing my long enough for a clip in top piece.

It's worth seeing what hairdressers you have near you that specialse in cancer patients, we are near a big cancer hospital and have a hairdressers that specialise in both chemo hair loss and wig styling, they have a private area for cuts out the back which I am not far off needing as when my hair is wet and they brush it it is mortifying, I NEVER look in the mirror til they're done.

So sorry this is epic
