How to do a 'nice' messy bun

peoplepleaser1 · 17/07/2019 18:20

More often then not my hair is shoved back in a 'messy bun' as I have an active outdoor job.

I literally make a ponytail and just loop the hanging down but back on itself.

I'd love to try to achieve a more 'done' version of this for when I go out but I'm really rather useless at doing my hair.

Can anyone give me any help please - I see some lovely versions on other people. I've tried google but it's a bit overwhelming!

Split the pony tail in to 2 separate pieces then individually twist them then twist the 2 pieces together then before you pin in, gently pull some bits slightly out. Pull some loose Strands of hair around your forehead and by your ears.

Plainandsimple · 17/07/2019 21:16

Hopski you’re a genius! Just tried this and bam - nailed it first time! No more loopy ponytails for me either! Thankyou 😊

hopski · 17/07/2019 21:53

@Plainandsimple you can also do it by using smaller sections, twist each one individually then twist into a bun and pin, wrap each section around the one you just pinned.

Stumpedasatree · 17/07/2019 21:57

Brilliant. I do the exact same as the OP so will try this now!

ohcanada · 17/07/2019 21:59

Genius hopski!

I was just going to say lots of dry shampoo if your hair isn't super thick

FenellaMaxwell · 17/07/2019 22:08

A Gibson tuck is super-easy. Grab the front of your hair on each side as if you were going to do a half ponytail and twist them round before you do the ponytail. Fasten the ponytail with an elastic then slide the elastic down a bit to give you some slack. Part the hair above the elastic, and then tuck the end of the ponytail through the gap. Then you just roll the ponytail up and pin the ends.

These things only work properly if you have thick hair. I have shit fine hair, my buns always look like they belong to a toddler with an enthusiastic mother sending them to ballet class .

Cuppa12345 · 17/07/2019 22:12

Avenger 😂

expatinspain · 17/07/2019 22:17

Yes, I second this only works for thick hair. How can you do a messy bun with fine hair??

Ellapaella · 17/07/2019 22:23

I put my hair in a high pony tail, pulling it up a bit at the crown to give volume. Then I take small sections and curl them over my finger and loop them back under and pin with Kirby grips. I do this clockwise all the way round. Works better when hair is not freshly washed - a day after washing is best.

FrenchHen · 17/07/2019 22:31

If you have fine hair, back comb the lengths, use a little dry shampoo and don't use a bobble. Twist the hair round on itself, like a standard bun but just pin into place. You want 3 or 4 good bobby pins, they must be tight and long. Pull a few bits out at the front sides.

The bobby pins in the pic are amazing for this.

Great ideas x

buttertoasty · 17/07/2019 22:39

The only way to do it is tie your hair up when you are in your pjs and staying at home chilling out for the evening, then it looks perfect.

As soon as you try to do it purposefully going out anywhere to face the world it will inevitably look horrific.

One of life's cruel jokes.

VittysCardigan · 17/07/2019 22:46

Avenger so true, mine is the same

MBM18 · 17/07/2019 22:52

So true buttertoasty 😂

gerritez · 17/07/2019 23:02

I think you have to have a certain type of hair for a good messy bun. Thick but floppy Grin mine is really thick but frizzy and coarse so doesn’t flop right. I can go a messy bun but bits just stick out like spikes rather than swish out gracefully Angry

peoplepleaser1 · 18/07/2019 06:42

Thank you all very much for the ideas. I love mumsnet! My hair is thick and floppy so I should have a chance to pull these off.

I saw a tutorial where you tie your hair up high on your head making it into a loop. Then divide the loops and use grips to pin down onto your head evenly. Always looks perfect :)

Elmo311 · 18/07/2019 11:15

Yeah, I'll probably have to stick to messy hair 😅 massive fail hahaha I just can't do it! Plus I have thin flyaway hair so it was probably never gonna work anyway...I will just dream !

Show us a pic of yours OP!

Twist the individual pieces of hair then pinning works on thinner hair.

youvegottobekidding · 20/07/2019 22:29

I can never get the hang of them either!
