What to do about washing clothes on 2 week holiday?

Not sure if this is the right place but what do you do about clothes for a 2 week holiday? It's a sight seeing holiday so 'proper' clothes rather than beachwear, and in August so I can't imagine I'll be able to wear things twice!

Do you take enough clothes for 2 weeks? I'm not sure I have enough summer things! Or do you wash on holiday? We are going self catering so there will be a washing machine but I don't fancy ironing on holiday and whilst the kids stuff might be ok not ironed mine and Dhs won't I would imagine!

First 2 week holiday (other than our honeymoon where not many clothes were required Grin) and I am keen to avoid washing and ironing on holiday!

That t shirts fine. Once it's on they crease anyway.

dementedpixie · 15/07/2019 22:07

Body heat takes the creases out although I dont really care if my clothes are creased

DogbertDogglesworth · 15/07/2019 22:12

I never iron anything.
Don't overload the drum and use fabric softener. Remove from the machine as soon as the door can be opened, give a good shake and hang to dry.
How you hang makes a big difference too. Tops pegged from the bottom, or under armpit, bottoms pegged from waist bands.
Once dry fold carefully as you unpeg them.
Alternatively, you could hand wash tops / t.shirts and shorts. Fold them and leave them to soak for 10 minutes before rinsing and pressing them rather than wringing to eliminate creasing. Then hang to dry.

When i go on holiday, i take my oldest knickers and throw them after wearing. I deliberately save them for this purpose Blush

SallyWD · 15/07/2019 22:15

I wash and wear creased clothes

LaPampa · 15/07/2019 22:19

Unless I was going somewhere super smart (in which case I probably wouldn’t be wearing a t shirt!) especially on holiday i would just wear that t shirt as body heat will get rid of the creases anyway, but equally it also wouldn’t take v long to iron it either if you’re bothered by the state of it....

I don’t use fabric conditioner & def don’t iron t shirts. Some blouses, shirts, dresses etc only. Husband can do his own!

Celebelly · 15/07/2019 22:21

Yeah, our iron is still in a box in our garage from when we moved in. 18 months ago. Grin

BuggersMuddle · 15/07/2019 22:24

I avoid this by taking clothes with more technical fabrics on sightseeing / active holidays tbh. Not sure that's much help if you have your holiday wardrobe already tbf.

IME technical fabrics are more comfortable, get a couple or several if you're camping of wears before needing washing and don't need ironing. They're also a hell of a lot more stylish than they used to be, as a lot of brands now have town or traveller ranges. That said, I'm not going to pretend I'm 'on trend' in my latest Haglofs shorts and Lululemon t-shirt Grin The decent brands are also indestructible.

DragonMamma · 15/07/2019 22:27

I wouldn’t wear that to shirt either OP - you’re not alone.

We are going for 2 weeks soon and I’ve basically taken enough clothes to only have to wash some essentials that don’t need ironing.

I occasionally use my hair straighteners to make things look more presentable Blush

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/07/2019 22:32

I iron everything, OP. We were away for a short break the other week, and I unpacked, ironed anything that was creased, then put it in the hotel wardrobe. I genuinely don’t mind doing it, and would far rather spend 15 minutes ironing than wear creased clothes. I know I am in a minority on MN though!

notangelinajolie · 15/07/2019 22:44

Sounds like you are making hard work for yourself with all this unecessary ironing. Follow these simple rules - I very rarely iron anything. I can't remember the last time.

  1. You are overloading your washer and dryer. If it goes in squished it will come out creased.
  2. Always use fabric conditioner.
  3. Don't leave dry clothes in the dryer to cool down - hang up straight away and I guarantee no creases and no ironing.
  4. For washing that goes on the line - give it a good shake to get the creases out. If you put creased washing in the line it will stay creased when it is dry. Finish off in the dryer for 5 mins and hang. Any creases will fall out.

Have a good holiday!

BackforGood · 15/07/2019 23:10

Another non ironer here, but, regardless of that - what would it matter if your t-shirt were a little creased n the 2nd week of your holiday ? Confused
Who is looking at you ??

Rachelover40 · 15/07/2019 23:13

If you really cannot bear creases, could you not just limit ironing to one thing that you want to wear, your husband do the same? Then it wouldn't take long, maybe ten minutes out of your time, and neither of you would be 'chained' to the ironing board.

Rachelover40 · 15/07/2019 23:17

PS: We did put a couple of things under the mattress once when we were away, it did make a difference, ie the creases were in a different place in the morning Smile.

I hope you have a tumble drier in your self catering place, we finish off drying in the tumbler and then take the stuff out straight away to reduce the need for ironing (not that we usually do any ironing, our stuff goes to the ironing shop).

sylbunny · 15/07/2019 23:21

The trick is to stop caring about creases.

fatandshattered89 · 15/07/2019 23:25

You will need to iron.

BeardedMum · 15/07/2019 23:31

It takes me 2 minutes of that to iron a top. I always just wash, out it away and iron before I get dressed.

managedmis · 16/07/2019 03:02

You either need an iron, a tumble dryer or to stop giving a shit.

Personally I wouldn't wear that t-shirt.

FiveShelties · 16/07/2019 03:52

If you try to pack stuff which will not need ironing, you will only have a few items to iron.

Tee short is really creased, I would have to iron that, but as others have said, you either iron or stop bothering about creased clothes.

StarlightLady · 16/07/2019 04:11

Iron on holiday? Shock

I take and buy holiday clothes on the basis of not needing ironing. The same applies for work trips.

If there is a washing machine and a line/drying rack I use that; I travel for work and try to get a studio rather than an hotel if l can.

If I’m in an hotel room, I wash undies/tops through and carry a small stretchy clothes line with me to hang in the bathroom.

isitwhatitis · 16/07/2019 04:30

I don't iron clothes at home so I wouldn't on holiday.

SpeckledyHen · 16/07/2019 06:38

No washing or ironing for me on holiday - it’s a holiday! I take enough for 2 weeks .

Cookit · 16/07/2019 06:45

I would not iron that t shirt. It looks fine and some of the creases will fall away once on anyway.

We only iron shirts.

summertime06 · 16/07/2019 06:50

I ironed one of DH's shirts when we went to a wedding a few months ago, had to search for the iron, it rarely gets used. Can't imagine what I'd need to iron on holiday. I love going self catering and having a washing machine, especially with kids who can get through a few outfits a day. Can just chuck everything and get it all cleaned and saves having piles of dirty washing piling up to take home.

MrsElizabethShelby · 16/07/2019 07:04

I don't care about creases (as long as it doesnt look like a screwed up piece of paper!)

I take enough for half a week if I'm going for a week and a week if I'm going for two ect and wash and dry halfway in a launderette somewhere.

Minimises the amount of luggage we have to take with us.

Oly4 · 16/07/2019 10:46

I take enough clothes for two weeks. No domestic chores on holiday!
