Sore cracked corner of lip

Help, this really hurts! It's not a cold sore I don't think as I never get them, but it is really sore every time I open my mouth. What can I do?

Loads of lip balm.

Nemesia · 15/07/2019 12:31

I'd start taking a vitamin b supplement, or more marmite!

This is so painful. I often get it in winter. Lots of Vaseline and be mindful of opening your mouth too wide. Every time it pops open it delays healing.
Keep an eye for any redness. Sometimes these need an antifungal to clear up.

Zillaah · 15/07/2019 12:34

Sudocrem sorts these. And yes to Marmite or vit B.

managedmis · 15/07/2019 12:34

I used to get this loads, really sore

Just don't speak for three days Grin

FindaPenny · 15/07/2019 12:37

I had this, hurts to talk and open mouth wide to eat. The thing that healed it for me was vitamin e oil.... I just kept putting loads on as lip balm didn't work. Superdrug did their own small bottle before for about £2, not sure they still do it but I imagine they do.

Stumpedasatree · 15/07/2019 12:44

Annoyingly, I take a good Vitamin B supplement already! Shall try the vitamin e oil. Thanks.

It’s almost certainly angular chelitis, do go to the Gp as you will likely need an anti bacterial and anti fungal cream

I get it when I’m stressed

Layoverlife · 15/07/2019 13:32

I get the same thing when I'm stressed/exams or lack of sleep as @slipperyeel suggested go to you're GP if it's the same as what I have no amount of Vaseline etc will make it better other then anti bac/ anti fungal cream suggested

alittlequinnie · 15/07/2019 14:03

Yup - it is angular chelitis and you need to go to GP for the cream.

A couple of applications sorts it and then you have loads of cream for if it flares up again.

I tried everything for months - two nights of the proper cream from GP and it was gone.

... I do sympathise though - so bloody painful and for something that should be so insignificant!

TroubleNo1 · 15/07/2019 16:54

Yes to angular colitis. I use a tablespoon of coconut oil mixed with 10 x drops of tea tree oil. Antibacterial and anti fungal. Keep applying a few times a day and overnight. Should clear up within a day or so.
Melt the coconut oil gently to mix it with the tea tree and keep it in a glass jar somewhere out of sunlight.

EnidButton · 15/07/2019 18:31

Yep angular chelitis. A gp or pharmacist will recommend you use Daktarin oral gel which you can buy yourself over the counter. However that didn't work for me so I used canesten thrush cream which cleared it up in 2-3 days.
You could try those without seeing a gp if you're sure you aren't deficient in any vitamins etc but a check might be a good idea anyway.

As a preventative, applying lansinoh lanolin (sold as nipple balm) on my lips every night stops me getting it and I never get chapped or dry lips either.

It's a really uncomfortable and painful thing to get so you have my sympathy. Flowers

ffiffi8 · 15/07/2019 18:33

I had this on both sides while pregnant, I was low on iron... try some iron tablets

youlittlecharmer · 15/07/2019 18:34

I had this before, it turned out that I was having a reaction to a different toothpaste than we usually use.

Tableclothing · 15/07/2019 19:01

A second vote for thrush cream. Supermarket version usually around £3.

Stumpedasatree · 15/07/2019 22:13

Brilliant. Thanks all! I'll try with what I have at home first: luckily have Sudocrem/coconut oil/tea tree/canesten...I almost live in Boots Grin
